ABC cited authorities as saying that Mr Stanford could potentially face criminal charges of money laundering and bribery of foreign officials.
Authorities said the SEC's action against Mr Stanford on Tuesday may have complicated the federal drug investigation. Allen Stanford is now considered a fugitive by law enforcement around the world, his whereabouts is unknown. He is assumed to be somewhere in South America or the Caribbean.
