Near miss, airplane buzzed by homemade drone in Western Australia, recorded on small digital video camera devise strapped to remote controlled model plane...Video of holiday passenger jet near miss below.A Virgin Australia jet aircraft has been buzzed by a model airplane strapped with a digital video camera and the results posted on Youtube and Facebook by an unidentified aviation hobbyist.
The incident happened above the skies of suburban Perth in Western Australia as the passenger aircraft packed with holiday makers from Melbourne came into land at Perth Domestic airport.
Aviation experts who have seen the video say the model airplane could have easily been sucked into the jet and caused a catastrophic failure of the jet engine.
'Model planes have metal parts in them - especially when you know there's a small camera connected - and if that had been sucked into the engine it could have brought the plane down,' said one expert.
Fuzzy footage taken from the digital camera placed on the ultra small, homemade drone, shows the 767 Virgin Australia jet approaching.
Wind force from the jet causes the hobbyist plane to sway. As the small aircraft turns to follow the passenger jet from behind digital video shows the hobbyists plane loose control and fall to the ground.
'This could have been disastrous. That model plane could have been sucked into an engine and all kinds of problems could have evolved, aviation expert Geoff Thomas said.
'And if it had hit the window of the cockpit who knows what might have happened. This was totally irresponsible.'
The owner of the remote control model plane is set to face up to 2 years jail time for the stunt.
The stunt video even comes with dubbed music from the movie Top Gun. Audio of dialogue recreating a scene from the film where “Maverick and Goose” acquire a target and try to get in a shot before crashing after encountering jet wash is included.
It is understood the offender took the video footage off the internet, but not before it was copied by others who handed it to the authorities.
The Virgin jet was about a mile from the runway when the incident occurred.
