A two-year-old female Gorilla's dramatic rescue from wildlife trackers in Africa captured the attention of millions from around the globe has been named Amani, meaning peace.
Amazing video of little Amani the Gorilla was seen by millions, found by officials in a dehydrated and wounded state at the bottom of a travel bag covered in clothing after six-hours in transit.

The Amani video captured hearts around the world and the plight of Amani raised awareness about the despicable affects of wild animal trafficking.

A 3-month long undercover investigation by the Congolese Wildlife Authority busted an international wildlife smuggling ring behind the Amani ordeal, one man was arrested when Amani was seized at Goma International Airport. The suspected trafficker was trying to sneak little Amani out of the country to an unknown destination.

Amani the 2-year-old gorilla is shy, hiding behind the lush bush at her new home.

Its believed that Amani's parents were killed by the animal wildlife traffickers who would have tried to sell the endangered eastern lowland gorilla Amani for up to US $20,000.

The director of Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Emmanuel de Merode, where baby gorilla Amani will spend her days being rehabilitated, said the capture highlighted a spreading wild animal trafficking problem.

"Our investigation has revealed a significant upsurge in the trafficking of baby gorillas in recent months, possibly as a result of the war last year. But we still do not know where these animals are being sent and who is buying them, but sources on the ground tell us that a baby gorilla can fetch up to $20,000," de Merode said.

Vets from the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project will tend to Amani as she makes a recovery.

The area Amani the gorilla was snatched from is affected by a 12-year civil war that the rest of the world has mostly forgotten, the Congo war is partly to blame for the rise in wild animal trade.

The parks in the forests of eastern DR of Congo Amani would still be living in are home to mountain gorillas, lowland gorillas, chimpanzees, forest elephants and rhinos, among other wildlife that are in serious danger of disappearing.

The Rangers of the eastern Congo forest have remained active in protecting these parks, 4 of which have been classified as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
