When Connie Culp had a shotgun fired into her face by her husband in 2004, she was lucky to survive, in Ohio Connie Culp fronted the world with a new face, the first US woman to receive a face transplant.

46-year-old Connie Culp spoke at a press conference at at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio publicly for the first time about her amazing ordeal.
Five months since receiving the face of a dead woman and five years after her husband shot her in the face Dick Cheney style, Connie Culp spoke about being able to talk, eat, smile, smell and taste properly for the first time.
The groundbreaking medical operation worked to give Connie Culp a new nose, cheeks, roof of her mouth and an eye, all parts of her face that were littered with hundreds of shotgun pellets and bone splinters when she was almost killed by her husband.
"I guess I'm the one you came to see today," Connie Culp told the packed news conference at the Cleveland Clinic, where her amazing medical operation was performed by talented surgeons.
But "I think it's more important that you focus on the donor family that made it so I could have this person's face," a grateful Connie Culp added.

Some 30 gruelling operations late, Connie Culp was still left unable to eat soluble food, breath and smell properly. But one December 10 2008 operation on Connie Culp's disfigured face using parts of her ribs, leg bones, and skin grafts, along with face muscles, nerves, skin and blood vessels from a woman who had just died, Connie Culp was a new woman.

The face transplant of Connie Culp, that would have been considered science fiction just a few years ago, was the fourth face transplant in the world. However Connie Culp's transplant was probably the most extensive yet.
