Spellista Kavya Shivashankar has won the much vaunted US national Spelling Bee.
I calm and collective 13-year-old Kavya Shivashankar wrote out every sing word she was asked to spell out load on her palm and always ended yet another victorious spelling round with a smile.
From Kansas, Kavya Shivashankar became America's Spelling Bee champion when she correctly spelt out the word "Laodicean" the Associated Press said.
The winning word from Kavya Shivashankar means lukewarm or indifference in religion or politics.
With her nervous family looking on Kavya Shivashankar breezed into Spelling Bee Championship history. Parents Mirle Shivashankar and Sandy Shivashankar told media of how proud they were of their girl Kavya, and little sister Vanya Shivashankar said so too.
"The competitiveness is in her," father Mirle Shivashankar told media after the win by Kavy Shivashanka.
"But she doesn't show that. She still has that smile. That's her quality."
"I can't believe it happened," Kavya Shivashanka said. "It feels kind of unreal."
With a dream to one day becoming a neurosurgeon, Kavya Shivashankar beat off competition from 11 finalists. The National Spelling Bee was broadcast by ABC to millions.
Victorious Kavya Shivashankar won herself $40,000 worth of cash and other prizes and the Spelling Bee Champions trophy.
Local newspaper the Kansas Star congratulated home hero Kavya Shivashankar with a front page congratulatory editorial.
