Originial Wizard of Oz Munchkin Mickey Carroll dies.One of the last remaining munchkins from golden aged classic the Wizard of Oz, Mickey Carroll had died of natural causes, news media reported.
A Missouri newspaper reported that Mickey Carroll died at the age of 89 on Thursday.
The St. Louis Dispatch said that Mickey Carroll, who was just over 3 feet tall during filming for the Wizard of Oz, became an entertainer early in life and befriended actress Judy Garland, leading to Mickey Carrolls role alongside her in classic "The Wizard of Oz".
A violin-playing Munchkin "Town Crier," Mickey Carroll was dressed in purple with a yellow flower on his vest in the Wizard of Oz film. Mickey Carroll was just 17 when he took the Munchkin role. Mickey Carroll kept growing until he was into his 40s, when he stood 4 feet 3 inches, a friend said.
The St. Louis Dispatch quoted Mickey Carroll on movie life: "When we were making the movie, we were singing 'Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead' and 'Follow the Yellow Brick Road.' We didn't know what we were saying, it was like gibberish, but I knew it was going to be a hit because of Judy Garland. She was so sweet as a teenager."
Back in 2007, Mickey Carroll and a number of the other surviving Wizard of Oz Munchkins attended a ceremony to dedicate a Munchkin star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Munchkin Mickey Carroll was born in 1919 to Italian immigrants, Mickey Carroll's actual given name was Michael Finocchiaro. Mickey Carroll He died at home in Crestwood, Missouri, and he lived in the state nearly his entire life, the newspaper said.
