Mark Sanford Love Affair: Argentinean Woman in Another US Political Love Scandal

The Governor of South Carolina, Mark Sanford, has admitted to an extramarital love affair with an as yet unnamed woman in Argentina. The announcement by the South Carolina governor is set to give late night TV and radio talk show comedians plenty of fuel with his first remarks.

"I have spent the last five days of my life crying in Argentina," Sanford said.

Gov. Mark Sanford said at a hastily called press conference that he had been on a secret trip to Argentina over Americas Father's Day weekend to visit the woman he is having an affair with.

Sanford’s relationship with the woman in Argentina became more sexually charged about a year ago. His wife, Jenny Sanford learnt about her husbands affair 5 months ago.

Earlier reports said Mark Sanford was on a Appalachian trail adventure, a cover up story, it appears.


Mark Sanford arrived at the Atlanta Hartsfield Airport late Tuesday on a flight from Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he had in fact gone and was met at the airport by only one reporter, the State's Gina Smith, who had received a tip that the governor would be arriving in Atlanta.

It was then that there was no going back for the Governor. Any cover Sanford may have had was blown.

"I have developed a relationship with what started as a dear dear friend from Argentina. It began very innocently as I expect many of these things do, just casual email back and forth," Sanford said. "But here recently this last year developed into something much more."

At the media conference, Mark Sanford said his wife had been aware of the love affair for some time. He said he and wife Jenny Sanford had been working through the affair for the last few months

Sanford's whereabouts had been unknown for a week, and the mystery surrounding his absence fueled speculation about who was in charge of South Carolina's government. An arrival at Atlanta International airport on Wednesday solved the mystery

Sanford, in an interview with The State newspaper, said he decided at the last minute to go to the South American as it was "exotic"
