Earthquake, Crete epicenter 6.7 earthquake...

A powerful 6.7 Earthquake has struck just south of the island of Crete in Greece.

The 6.7 preliminary magnitude earthquake struck at 34.188°N, 25.426°E

The Crete Earthquake struck at 12:30 p.m. local time in Greece, the USGS said. The 6.7 undersea July 1 2009 earthquake was centered about 130 kilometers so off the city of Iraklion on Crete, the USGS said.

Generally an earthquake with a 6.7 magnitude is considered powerful or strong and is capable of causing significant damage.

However the distance of the quake from major populations and its depth 38 kilometers or 36 miles means its is unlikely to have caused much damage.


The USGS said the 6.7 Crete earthquake hit at these distances from major human populations in Greece and North Africa.

130 km (80 miles) S of Iraklion, Crete, Greece
195 km (120 miles) SE of Chania, Crete, Greece
270 km (165 miles) NNE of Tubruq, Libya
450 km (280 miles) SSE of ATHENS, Greece
