Story: A meteorite has crashed into the ground in the Eastern European nation of Latvia, a geologist said and local media said.

The Latvia meteorite crater was some 27 feet (9 meters) wide and 9 feet (3 meters) deep and was still smoldering after hitting the earths surface late Sunday local time.

The meteorite object crashed into the ground in the Latvian region of Mazsalaca situated near the Estonian border. Media in the region said that the Latvia meteorite fell on a farm named "Kundrati"; no one was injured.

Reports said the meteor crashed to the ground around 17.30 hours (5.30pm) on Sunday October 26th 2009 local time.

People in the area of the Latvian meteor crash site reported seeing an object that was "on fire" fall from the sky. It was not officially confirmed to be a space rock but initial reports suggest it was indeed an object that likely entered the earths atmosphere before crashing to earth.

Emergency services in Latvia quickly responded to the meteor crash and roped the area off from the public. A team from the Latvian national radiation response unit connected to the nations military was called to the scene to test for any dangers the crashed object might have for public health. Reports said a short time later radiation levels were normal;.

Scientist said that given the size of the crater the October 25 2009 Latvia Meteorite created, the object that crashed to earth would have been around 1 meter in diameter. Its likely the object would have been much larger before it entered the earths upper atmosphere.
