Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympic games!

Brazil's most famous city, Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Summer Games, the first time a city on the South American continent will host the prestigious international sporting gala, and will give a massive economic boost to the poverty stricken city.

The news Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympic Games came as a shock to the other city hopefuls, Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago. RIO 2016 may be 7 years away, but there is so much to do for the city between now and then, the time is sure to fly by for the Rio 2016 organizing team.

Surprisingly Chicago was the first city to be kicked out of the running during the first round of voting at by International Olympic Committee members. It was expected Chicago would make it to the last round, as President Barack Obama himself had flown into Copenhagen on teh last day of bidding to present his home cities case for the Games of Rio 2016.

After four failed attempts at grabbing the rights to host the 1936, 1940, 2004 and 2012 Olympic games, Rio de Janeiro finally won its chance to host the 2016 Olympics. Rio 2016 came about with very hard lobbying by the Brazilian IOC and Olympic committee, and a feeling that it was about time South America and a rapidly expanding Brazil deserved to host an Olympics.

The Rio 2016 Summer Games will run from August 5 to august 21 1016.
