Did late night talk show kind David Letterman have an adult relationship with his favourite TV assistant Stephanie Birkitt?
After David Letterman went public with a bizarre confession, during Thursday nights' now famous episode of The Late Show, that he had adult relations with female staffers on his show, news broke that a CBS '48 Hours' current affair show producer had allegedly demanded $2 million from the host in extortion money.
34-year-old Late Show and David Letterman assistant Stephanie Birkitt...51-year-old Emmy award winning producer, writter and director Joe Halderman was named as the man arrested by police and charged with first degree attempted grand larceny.
David Letterman decided he would break news of his back stage love antics on his own show, instead of the front pages of NYC tabloid media by saying:
"I have had sex with women who work for me on this show." The audience was stunned.
Letterman went on to explain his blackmail situation: "I don't usually receive packages at 6 in the morning in the backseat of my car," he joked.
"So I get to looking through it, and there's letters in the package and it says, 'I know that you do some terrible, terrible things, and I can prove that you do those terrible things.'
"And sure enough, there was some stuff in the pages that proved I did those terrible things," he said.
According to the New York Daily News, Stephanie Birkitt was a CBS Late Show staffer who "lived with" accused extortionist Robert Joe Halderman, citing public records out of New York.34-year-old Stephanie Birkitt is often seen on the Late Show with David Letterman from the Ed Sullivan theatre in various stunts and comedy skits over the years.
According to Wikipedia, Stephanie Birkitt started as an intern with David Letterman during the spring of 1996. After graduation, she worked as a page for CBS News, 48 Hours, where Robert Halderman is a producers and the Late Show.
The David Letterman-Stephanie Birkitt love affair is all but rumour until confirmed, however it would seem at this stage, given reports that Robert Halderman used to live with Stephanie Birkitt may well be one of the woman Letterman spent intimate moments with as confessed on Thursday nights taped show.
The question now remains, what other women staffers of Letterman has the late night talk king enjoyed adult relationships with, and will David Letterman be able to survive this scandal and legal proceedings, without the US public or media turning against him.
