Bin Laden Almost Killed Bill Clinton, Claims Ken Gormley in The Deat of American Virtue: Clinton V Starr

A new book claims most wanted terrorist, Osama bin Laden, almost managed to kill former US President Bill Clinton in a 1996 assassination attempt.

The former US leader, Clinton was allegedly just minutes from a bomb planted under a bridge during a visit to the Philippines.

Kept Top Secret, the incident during Bill Clinton's trip to the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation Forum in Manila, could have turned deadly if not for last minute deviation by the US Secret Service.

The claims were chronicled in a book by American law professor Ken Gormley in the book The Death of American Virtue: Clinton vs Starr.

"The thwarted assassination attempt was never made public," Gormley writes his book.

"It remained top secret except to select members of the US intelligence community."

New reports at the time of the incident said bombs were indeed found in Manila, but were linked to a Communist political militant conspiracy and talk of Islamic terrorists was non-existent, at least publicly.

During his 1996 trip to Manila, Bill Clinton was due to travel by motorcade to visit a local politician. His rout took the President across a bridge in central Manila.

Minutes before he was due to pass over the bridge, American secret service agents reportedly received a "crackly message in one earpiece" suggesting intelligence had intercepted communications that indicated an attempted attack was imminent.

The intercepted communications are said to have included the words "bridge" and "wedding" – reportedly a code word for assassination or attack used by many Islamic terror organizations.

The Clinton Presidential motorcade was re-routed and a large bomb was discovered under the Manila bridge.

Professor Ken Gormely writes that a top secret 1990's US investigation into the plot "revealed that it had been masterminded by a Saudi terrorist living in Afghanistan – a man named Osama bin Laden".
