Google (GOOG) is set to launch its much anticipate Google Phone smarpthone, possibly called the Nexus One, in the first days of 2010.

In a press release to technology and general news journalists and bloggers, Google will host a press gathering at its global HQ in California on the morning of January 5th 2010.

Presumably, the media event in Mountain View California event will have something to do the company’s Nexus One Android smartphone and the timing is seen as a PR oxygen sucker away from rival Apple Inc.

Google’s choice of the 5th of January 2010 is seen by technology analysts as a way to take attention into the anticipate Consumer Electronics Show to start in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 7th 2010.

Google appears to be using the Steve Jobs silicon valley PR playbook. Back in 2007, Jobs used the Consumer Electronics Show with the launch of the Apple iPhone, changing the smartphone game forever.

Interesting sources reported that at least initially, the Google Smartphone Android device will be sold online only from January 5th 2010.

Can Google go one better with the Nexus One Android smartphone to take to war against Apple?
