New York Penn Station Trains Halt During Wednesday December 23 rush hour

Travel chaos during Christmas week continues in New York and New Jersey with trains ground to a halt Wednesday morning December 23 due to a serious power problem.

Countless thousands of commenter's wanting to move in and out of New York city were stranded during peak hour times due to Amtrak power issues.

Reports said there was enough power to trains to keep passengers warm and provide lighting, but not enough power was reaching individual trains to run the train engines.

Many trains were stranded just outside a normally extremely busy Penn Station and others are stuck between Newark and New York City.

Shortly after first reports came in, NJ transit posted this message online: Rail service in/out of New York Penn Station is temporarily suspended due to Amtrak power problems in New York. Midtown Direct being diverted to Hoboken. PATH is cross-honoring at Newark Penn, Hoboken and 33rd Street. NJT Bus cross-honoring in/out of Port Authority Bus Terminal.

"Now we have a power problem in Penn Station. No trains are leaving. Great start to my DC trip," one angry passenger wrote on real time social network site Twitter.

Another angry train passenger wrote: "Penn Station has no power, so I've been sitting on a train at Secaucus for 15 minutes next to a nice old man. I bet this is gonna be bad."

"Penn station. train delyaed indefinitely. unending christmas music. shoot me," another New York city passanger said.

"Penn Station shutting down is equivalent to the Titanic sinking and passengers trying to board the last 2 escape boats while there's a storm," another passanger mused.

Seving some 600,000 passengers per day, Penn Station is the busiest passenger transportation facility in the United States.

Penn Station is at the center of the Northeast Corridor, an electrified passenger rail line extending south to Washington, D.C., and north to Boston. Intercity trains are operated by Amtrak, while commuter rail services are operated by the Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit. The station is also served by six New York City Subway routes.
