Robert McJannett: Australian Arrested in Bali, Indonesia for Alleged Marijuana Possession

Arrested: Robert McJannett, former political candidate arrested in Bali, Indonesia.

A former Australian political candidate, Robert Paul McJannett, has been arrested on the Indonesian resort island of Bali for drug smuggling.

Media reported Robert Paul McJannett, a former candidate for the Queensland State Parliament was allegedly found with marijuana stuffed into a sock in his luggage as he arrived in Indonesia.

48-year-old Robert Paul Mcjannett was arrested at Bali's Ngurah Rai airport as he arrived with his son around 11.30pm December 28 2009.

Report said Robert Paul Mcjannett arrived in Bali from a Virgin Blue flight from Perth in Western Australia.

In 2005 Robert Paul Mcjannett ran as an independent candidate for a seat in the Queensland state parliament. Robert Paul Mcjannett had since moved to Western Australia where in 2009 he ran for, and failed to win, a position in the powerful workers Union, Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union of Workers.

"We found two grams of marijuana in his luggage," customs official Bagus Endro Wibowo told local media.

The local media reports said Robert Paul Mcjannett luggage passed through an airport X-ray machine, and officers allegedly found marijuana rapped in a sock in his luggage.

"Because he carried more than two grams, this could not be indicated as users because users limitation is only 0.15 gram. That's why he's aimed with carrying drugs," an Indonesian Colonel said.

Authorities said Robert Paul Mcjannett even tried to flush the drug down a toilet in a failed attempt to rid the evidence: "He even ran with the marijuana and tried to flush it in toilet, but the officers managed to avoid it," the Indonesian customs official said.

Reports said Robert Mcjannett's Australian and British passports were confiscated and he was taken into custody.

It's believed Robert Mcjannett faces a large prison sentence if found guilty of possessing and importing the banned drug, with the possibility of the death sentence.

Hello people! Not even the dumbest Australian would take dope to Indonesia. A well travelled, smart, educated, 47 year old man would not take a handful of pot wrapped in socks and tin to Bali. The package would've looked like a bomb on the x-ray machine at Ngurah Rai Airport and its odd that this metal package was not detected at Perth airport before he departed to Bali. Sorry folks this dude has been set up. Unless he says the dope is his, fakes remorsefulness and pays bribes... Robert McJannett meet Schapelle Corby. He's going to be in Kerobokan Jail for a very long time.
