Strawberry Crab: Bizarre Species Found Off Taiwan

Strawberry crab!

A bizarre species of crab, named the Strawberry Crab, has been found off Taiwan.

Professor Ho Ping-ho from the National Taiwan Ocean University said the crab resembles a species called Neoliomera Pubescens, that lives in the areas around Hawaii, Polynesia and Mauritius.

However it has a clam-shaped shell about 1 inch wide, which makes it distinct.

Crabs are omnivores feeding primarily on algae. There are more than 5,000 known species in the world.

Professor Ho Ping-ho from the National Taiwan Ocean University told local media that he made the Strawberry Crap discovery as he did research on the environmental impact of a shipwreck in 2009 on the beaches of southern Kenting National Park.

"One was dead while the other was dying when they were found on a beach of Chialoshui," Professor Ho Ping-ho said.

"Luckily the oil leak from the shipwreck was not serious, otherwise the two crabs might have been polluted and escaped our eyes," Ho Ping-ho said.
