Google Buzz: New Social Networking Platform Hits Web

Google Buzz - "a Google approach to sharing."

Google has announced its attempt to make a play for the growing online social media market with a new platform called Google Buzz.

Google held a press conference at its Mountain View, California headquarters to announce Google Buzz on Tuesday February 20 2010.

Google Buzz will utilize email platform Gmail to create a Facebook and Twitter style status update component it hopes will rival the two social networking platforms in the popularity stakes.

Google Buzz will not just be its own separate social network, but Google Buzz will pull from other social networks like Twitter to give users a feel for real time buzz.

Google executive, Todd Jackson said Google Buzz would also pull real time information from other mutli media inspired social networking platforms such as Picasa, Flickr and other sites.

Initial reports from technology journalists said Google Buzz looks a lot like Facebook and allows users to share links and photos in a similar fashion.

The key to the failure or success of Google Buzz will no doubt be smartphones, and Google ensured press conference attendees Buzz would be available on iPhones as well as other smartphones. That includes of course the Google smartphone, the Nexus One.

The launch of Google Buzz came with some criticism about how Google would pool information that many people in social networks would likely not be happy to see outside where they expected it to be.

"Google Buzz raises again the question of who owns your Web presence. I say it should be you, not Google, Facebook, etc," said social media commentator David Gilmore.
