
The roof of a building at the famous Smithsonian museum in Baltimore has collapsed, reports say.
The roof of a building hosing part of the Garber Centre, which stores valuable Smithsonian artifacts collapsed Wednesday morning February 10 2010, said the reports. The collapse came in the midst of one of the worst snow storms in memory.
Firefighters in the area responded at 6:49 AM to investigate the collapse and shut off electricity and natural gas to the warehouse eliminating any consequences involving those utilities.
The damage was done to warehouse #21 at the Garber Facility. It is unknown what, if any, artifacts are affected by this roof collapse. There were no reported injures.
The Smithsonian building that collapsed was actually an off site complex, but none the less stored artifacts belonging to the highly recognized Smithsonian museum.
The Smithsonian museum released a statement saying all of its properties would be closed Wednesday due to the building collapse.
The institute said all Smithsonian museums, including the National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall and the Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA will be closed Wednesday, February 10.
A February 13 weekend Family Day at Smithsonian has been rescheduled for February 27.
According to the Smithsonian web site: The Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility, located in Suitland, Md. is where the National Air and Space Museum preserves and stores aircraft, spacecraft, and other artifacts, and restores these artifacts to represent a specific period in their history.
The facility is a no-frills assembly of about 32 metal buildings belonging to the National Air and Space Museum and other Smithsonian organizations. About 19 buildings store airplanes, spacecraft, engines, and various parts. One building is devoted to a large restoration shop and 3 buildings are for exhibition production.
