Border Creatures: The Paintings of Adrian Cox

article

Flesh, fauna, minerals, and bone. They blend in mutated masses that seem to constantly evolve in their environment. These are the “Border Creatures”, the beings that exist in the paintings of artist Adrian Cox.

The Saint Louis, Missouri based painter has built a realm of hybrid anatomy that takes on the characteristics of their environment whilst creating a fluid narrative. One can find a romantic whimsy in the seemingly grotesque figures. The creatures strive to achieve a greater unity with the landscape that surrounds them. Cox ushers along this story line by allowing viewers to witness the Border Creatures’ evolving connection between themselves and their universe whilst discovering the parallels between ourselves on Earth.

A native Georgian, Cox attended University of Georgia for his undergraduate studies and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with honors in 2010. After years of a figurative focused curriculum, Cox then attended Washington University of Saint Louis for graduate studies. The program threw him into a world of conceptual practices. This assisted in Cox discovering new ways to think and speak about his work. This development had morphed the Border Creatures from their once mostly human forms to what we see now, the essence of universal connection.

Adrian Cox received his Master of Fine Arts degree in 2012 and exhibited at Corey Helford Gallery in LA, Roq la Rue in Seattle, Modern Eden in San Francisco, and BeinArt Gallery in Melbourne Australia, among many others. In addition to exhibiting, Cox is the gallery coordinator at the Millitzer Gallery, an alternative art-space in Saint Louis, and currently works as an adjunct lecturer in painting in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in Saint Louis.
