Fable & Folklore

Everyone has the same experiences, yet everyone responds differently to them. Hunger and pain. Hot and cold weather. Joy and sorrow. Our reactions to these events may vary, but all of these things are unavoidable. Folklore gives us the wisdom to understand these moments from different points of view.

It showcases that all of our problems and successes happen in every culture and throughout different periods of history. We are unique as individuals, but we are all connected through these moral truths.

“Fable and Folklore” is a beautifully curated exhibition by Danijela Krha Purssey and the Beautiful Bizarre Magazine team, featuring over 80 of the top artists in today’s international modern and narrative surrealism art movement. Each artist has done an incredible job creating a new artwork that lets us read a whole new fable and folklore story with a unique and creative perspective. It’s a great honor to work Danijela and the Beautiful Bizarre team along with all the incredible artists in the show! Their dedicated teamwork, their love and passion for art, and bringing everyone together has created an epic exhibition and magazine that lives and inspires forever. Thank you Danijela, the BBM team, and to all the “out of this world” talented artists in the show! We are grateful to be a part of this exhibition with you!”

Farmers’ Almanac

Fables often transport readers and listeners to a fantasy realm depicting epic adventure with magical elements and mythical creatures that relate to the traditional beliefs, customs and stories of a community that transcends generations. They are timeless and enchanting stories that often contain moral lessons that can be learned about a particular tradition, culture or society through the stories it tells.

The wisdom of the wise and the experience of the ages is preserved into perpetuity by a nation’s fables, folklore, and proverbs.

Serendipity

It is often said that art imitates life, and just like life, art can surprise and delight us in unexpected ways. Serendipitous moments can provide artists with inspiration, influence their creative process, and even shape the final outcome of their work into something beautiful, bizarre, and remarkably unique.

“Serendipity” is a thought provoking and magnificent collection of works expressing motifs of happy coincidences conceived by some of the most talented voices in Narrative Surrealism today.

Secret Longings is our 1st Beautiful Bizarre Magazine curated event at Corey Helford Gallery, featuring 78 of the best International artists in the New Contemporary Art scene.  The exhibition is a phenomenal success with collectors enthralled as they visit this dreamy wonderland. Danijela Krha Purssey, the co-founder and editor in chief, has created a sophisticated and glamorous world with Beautiful Bizarre Magazine. It is a utopian landscape where magical, sumptuous artwork springs from the pages.  Imbued with her incredible intuitive sense, she has a talent for curating the best of the New Contemporary Art genre.  I’ve been enamored with the magazine since its inception in 2013, and so this collaboration with Beautiful Bizarre Magazine on Secret Longings is a dream come true for Corey Helford Gallery.

Sherri J. Trahan, Gallery Director

This is the first time that Beautiful Bizarre Magazine has worked with Corey Helford Gallery in this capacity, and we are so grateful to Gallery Director, Sherri J. Trahan and team for their professionalism and hard work on behalf of Beautiful bizarre Magazine and all the artists involved.

Halcyon Days: A period of tranquility and happiness, often nostalgic, used to describe an idyllic time in the past that is remembered.

The last few years have seen ongoing struggle for many people around the world, and of course the unending damage to nature. But rather than focusing on these challenges that easily send us into a doom spiral, I wanted this exhibition to focus on the good times, the positive memories, the experiences that bring warmth and comfort when we recall them. Halcyon Days is an expression of joy, and our combined hope for the future.

Some days I wish I could go back in life. Not to change anything, but to feel a few things twice.

Halcyon Days will also showcase the work of the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize 2022 winners, in each of the four Award categories: RAYMAR Traditional Art Award (1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize Winners); INPRNT Photography Award (1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize Winners); Yasha Young Projects Sculpture Award (1st and 3rd Prize Winners); iCanvas Digital Art Award  (1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize Winners) and of course, the Grand Prize Winner.

What better gift could you give your loved ones or yourself, than the gift of original art?

The below interview was originally published in the Armidale Express newspaper and online here. Much thanks to Senior Journalist Vanessa Arundale for taking the time to speak with our Editor-in-Chief, Danijela Krha Purssey.

When Danijela Krha Purssey moved to Armidale four years ago with her husband Richard for his work, her friends in Sydney were worried a life in the country would be too isolating for her. There was also the complication of continuing to run her wildly successful global art magazine from regional Australia, but Ms Krha Purssey says she has never regretted the move.

“I embraced the idea from the beginning,” she said. “I have never been afraid of a change of scenery and place, so I welcomed the opportunity to live in the New England region of NSW. It is also halfway between Sydney where many of our friends are and Brisbane where our families are.”

Ms Krha Purssey is an entrepreneur, the editor-in-chief and co-founder (along with her husband Richard) of the Australian based international contemporary art magazine, Beautiful Bizarre Magazine.

Born from a social media group page started over a decade ago, the business now has more than one million followers. More than 36 issues of Beautiful Bizarre have been released, more than 2300 web articles have been published, and an interactive digital magazine has been developed and launched.

As well as all this, at least 10 exhibitions in four countries have been curated, and the work of countless creatives from all corners of the globe has been shared.

“I have always had a deep love of the arts and my personal experience with visual art began with my studies in high school,” Ms Krha Purssey said.

“This then progressed to my joining the artist platform DeviantArt. At the time there were over 20 million artists all sharing their work online and it was a wonderful community for creatives. I created a group on this platform to share my favourite artists’ works and grew this audience over some years.”

Ms Krha Purssey initially ran her sharing platform as a passionate hobby before launching her first magazine in 2013. And she continued to squeeze in her work on her publishing business around her ‘day job’ until 2016.

“As you can imagine this wasn’t sustainable in the long-term,” she said.

“That year I was awarded the prestigious AMP Foundation ‘Tomorrow Makers’ Award, which included grant funding to expand Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, and that was a pivotal moment for me because it allowed me to quit my day job and work full-time to grow and expand the business.”

And expand she has, with the company now made up of seven staff based across the UK, US, Greece, Nepal and Australia. It also has more social media followers than any other Australian based art or photography magazine, and most Australian public and private galleries.

Oh, and next year, 20 back issues of Beautiful Bizarre Magazine will be sent to the moon.

“There have been many highs over the years, many of which I still pinch myself over,” Ms Krha Purssey said.

“Being able to survive the COVID pandemic, creating partnerships with private and public galleries around the world, and launching the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize which inspires creatives from around the world to pursue a life and career in the arts.

“But I would have to say that the most incredible high was discovering that Beautiful Bizarre Magazine will be part of the Lunar Codex project – which started as a project to spread hope during the years of the COVID-19 pandemic on earth. It speaks to the idea that, despite wars and pandemics and climate upheaval, humankind found time to dream and to create art.”

Filipino-Canadian physicist, Dr Samuel Peralta, has digitally archived a diverse collection of contemporary culture from 91 different countries including art, literature, music, and film onto nickel-shielded memory cards that will be placed into three different time capsules.

“I am very grateful and deeply honoured to think that future generations of humanity, and perhaps sentient beings from other worlds will one day read Beautiful Bizarre Magazine to get some understanding about our culture,” Ms Krha Purssey said. “It’s totally mind-blowing!”

Running Beautiful Bizarre from Armidale is business as usual, Ms Krha Purssey said. “Myself and my team have always worked from our home offices, so moving to Armidale was not an issue for the business,” she said.

“My team is spread out around the globe and working remotely has never been an issue for us. We stay connected via social media and of course emails and calls. The only downside is we don’t get to see each other in person very often.

“In Berlin in 2019 I met my deputy editor Natalia Joruk for the opening of our first museum exhibition. It was the first face to face meeting for us in the five years we had been working together. It was a wonderful moment, such excitement at seeing her face and being able to hug her, it felt like seeing an old friend again.

“So I do wish the team had more opportunities to meet face-to-face, but I feel deeply grateful that I am able to be so flexible with where I live and work.”

And Ms Krha Purssey says she is also grateful she met Rachael Parsons, the director of the New England Regional Art Museum, soon after arriving in town. “She has become my ‘fabulous arty friend’ with whom I can share my passion for the arts, and the successes and challenges of my business,” Ms Krha Purssey said.

Rachael Parsons, Director of New England Regional Art Museum, Danijela Krha Purssey, Editor-in-Chief Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, Richard Purssey, Technical Director Beautiful Bizarre Magazine

“The fact that Armidale has a regional art museum is a huge plus for the town, the region, and me personally. Being able to continue to engage in the arts through the regular exhibitions has been wonderful.

“Plus everything in Armidale is three minutes from my house so we actually go out and enjoy pubs, restaurants, events, and natural places in and around town much more often than we did in Sydney.

“I love the clear blue skies, the bird song, the quiet, the obvious change of seasons, and the friendly welcoming people.”

And although it takes a little longer to get overseas and out to other art shows and fairs, Ms Krha Purssey said the regional housing market has meant the couple now own their first home.

“I really enjoy gardening so having our own home has given me the opportunity to get my hands in the dirt, and to nurture life and watch it grow,” she said. “I find gardening to be a wonderful way to disconnect from technology and screens, and to be present in the moment.”

The first museum exhibition in Australia curated by Ms Krha Purssey , Interconnectedis now on show at NERAM.

From the opening reception of Beautiful Bizarre Magazine’s curated exhibition ‘Interconnected’ at the New England Regional Art Museum. Shown here: Rachael Parsons, Director of NERAM, Danijela Krha Purssey and Richard Purssey, Beautiful Bizarre Magazine and various participating artists.

“It is a real joy to bring the Beautiful Bizarre Magazine brand aesthetic to my own country, and hometown through the work of more than 70 of the best representational artists working across styles, media and genres in this country,” she said.

“We also host our own non-acquisitive international art prize. Now in its fifth year, we are giving away over US$57,000 in cash and prizes, generously donated by our incredible sponsors.

“This year, the grand prize winner will receive US$13,500 cash and the prize is open to all static mediums and styles. I strongly encourage artists of all ages and stages to enter the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize before July 17. “I would love to see their work.”

The Beautiful Bizarre Magazine curated exhibition Interconnected, which opens on May 13 at the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM) in Armidale, New South Wales, is the second Museum exhibition by Beautiful Bizarre, and the first to be held in the magazine’s home country, Australia.

Albert Einstein

This exhibition is much broader in its scope than our usual curated exhibitions. It expands the category of still life and landscape, intersecting these genres with lowbrow, neopop and dark surrealism. The representation of daily occurrences, the small objects around us, and the unfiltered reality that we live in, has the capacity to connect with people and provide a ground to start meaningful conversations. I decided to include other genres and styles, along with figurative art to appeal to the broader audience in regional Australia. To show collectors, artists and enthusiasts that all of these styles have value and are representative of the exceptional work being made in this country.

With over 70 artists each working in their own unique style, we can see an amazing diversity and expression of the Interconnected theme, and what it means to each artist on a personal level. This exhibition also includes a wonderful diversity of styles, genres, and media including oil, watercolour and acrylic paint, gouache, coloured pencil, ink, markers, charcoal, graphite, ceramics, thread, paper, soldering iron, resin, wax, wood, bones, textiles, found objects, digital, and photography.

Of course we will each have our own thoughts and opinions about what Interconnected means to us in 2022, however I believe that the last few years of the global pandemic, drought, fires, floods, the eroding of women’s rights, and now the war in Ukraine has made evident just how interconnected we are as a species – no matter our geographical location, society, ethnicity, or religion. The climate crisis is also affecting Australians in extreme and devastating ways, making the fact of our interconnectedness to nature glaringly obvious. Sadly we are not doing enough, quickly enough, to make real change in this area. My hope is that this exhibition will also shine a light on the importance of change now – not just for our environment and nature, but our human populations too.

Animalia - Where The Wild Things Are

Animals, like us, are living souls. They are not things. They are not objects. Neither are they human. Yet they mourn. They love. They dance. They suffer. They know the peaks and chasms of being.”

If you missed the opening reception of ‘Animalia’, you can take a peek at the fabulous video [below] that Haven Gallery and @bennissenart prepared showcasing the exhibition below. How incredibly beautiful does the gallery and hang look?

I am also very grateful to Gallery Director’s Erica Berkowitz and Joseph Weinreb for their continued support of Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, and their incredible passion and dedication to the arts. You are both a huge inspiration – thank you!

Danijela curates some of the most premier talents of today and challenges their artistic styles and narratives with her thoughtful and engaging exhibition concepts. “Animalia” is an especially noteworthy topic as it pertains to our current environmental climate, and reminds both artist and viewer of the importance in the preserving of biodiversity on our shared planet. The exhibition unifies artistry on a worldwide scale as the theme inspires both personal and universal axioms that connect us as individuals to all living beings on both the individual and mass level.

‘Animalia’, is Beautiful Bizarre Magazine’s 12th international curated exhibition, and third at Haven Gallery in Long Island, New York. It brings together over 80 of the world’s best two and three dimensional artists, each exploring the ‘Animalia’ theme through their own unique styles, genres and mediums.

“Using animals as the subject for art lets people think about relationships in an abstract way. It’s easier for people to view an issue between a rabbit and a fox than it is to view an issue between two people.”

Phillip Singer – Winner of the 2020 Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize

The use of animal subjects in art provides the artist with a unique opportunity to tell stories and convey important messages in a non-confrontational and gentler way. Hence, I believe, we have seen a significant increase in artwork featuring anthropomorphism [the attribution of human traits, emotions, or intentions to non-human entities]. Artists are the voice, and the social conscience of our time – challenging us to more honestly consider our relationship with creatures both wild and tame.

Animals and our relationship with them are both complex and contradictory. Many of us have pets that we adore and treat like our babies, however still don’t fully understand humanities impact on the habitats of the wild creatures of the world.

I wholeheartedly feel as Jane Goodall does… as she so beautiful articulated in the quote below.

“I think I’d like to be remembered as someone who really helped people to have a little humility and realize that we are part of the animal kingdom not separated from it.”

Jane Goodall

So through this exhibition, ‘Animalia’, that I hope we can invite the viewer into a special world, one that highlights the grace, beauty, diversity, and importance of both our wild and companion animals. That it helps us to understand their importance and to give us a greater respect for them through the language of art.

‘Animalia’ will also showcase the work of the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize 2021 winners, in each of the four Award categories: RAYMAR Traditional Art Award (1st and 3rd Prize Winners); INPRNT Photography Award (1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize Winners); Yasha Young Sculpture Award (1st and 3rd Prize Winners); iCanvas Digital Art Award  (1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize Winners) and of course, our overall 1st Prize Winner.

“Animals, like us, are living souls. They are not things. They are not objects. Neither are they human. Yet they mourn. They love. They dance. They suffer. They know the peaks and chasms of being.”

“We not only nurture our sacred relationships through ritual, but we are nurtured by them as well. In ritual, we move, and we are moved.” – Alison Leigh Lilly

‘Ritual’, Beautiful Bizarre Magazine’s second curated exhibition at Haven Gallery in New York, brings together over 50 of the world’s best two and three dimensional artists, whom have explored the theme ‘Ritual’ through their own unique styles, genres and mediums.

Life is embedded with Rituals. They nurture us and improve us. Rituals are an action or ceremony performed in a customary way. Be it religious or personal, rituals give our lives meaning. Without them we would be floating through life with nothing to tie us down, or to expand us to the people we can become.

‘Ritual’ will also showcase the work of the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize 2019 winners, in each of the four Award categories: INPRNT Traditional Art Award, Stocksy United Photography Award, Sculpture Award, Digital Art Award and of course our overall 1st Prize Winner. As a leader and advocate for the arts, Beautiful Bizarre Magazine champions emerging and mid-career artists. In the 6 years since our launch, Beautiful Bizarre Magazine has proudly become a voice, a tribe, and a platform for creatives whose work doesn’t always fit neatly into the traditional fine art “box”. In keeping with our mission, the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize seeks to inspire creatives from around the world to pursue a life and career in the arts, and to help careers grow through our exposure of their work.

The Winners of the 2019 Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize will also be presented their specially commissioned glass art Award sculptures at the special opening reception on 14 December.

The Beautiful Bizarre Magazine Co-Founders Danijela Krha Purssey and Richard Purssey are flying in from Australia to attend the opening, as are a number of the artists and Art Prize winners. We would love to see you there!

Beautiful Bizarre Magazine’s debut Museum exhibition Gaia Reborn: A Future Utopia opened to huge crowds on Saturday 11th May at Urban Nation Museum for Urban Contemporary Art’s, Project M space in Berlin. Our sincere thanks to everyone who attended, we loved sharing the very special evening with you!! Scroll to the bottom to see some of the great photographs of the gallery space and opening reception.

And the story goes….

Beginning with a glass of bubbles, as every good night should, the Beautiful Bizarre Magazine team gathered in Berlin for the opening of ‘Gaia Reborn: A Future Utopia’, a seminal exhibition showcasing the best contemporary artists from around the world. Each exploring a critical topic – the conservation of our planet, in their unique signature styles!

Dressed up and ready to get the celebration underway, we walked through the streets admiring buildings covered in the incredible street art Berlin is famous for. Culminating in Findac’s special new mural on the outside wall of Urban Nation’s Project M space. Fin’s beautiful goddess brings to life the duality of nature, the fragility and power, creation and destruction – perfectly setting the overall tone of the exhibition, as she welcomed the crowds into the gallery.

Upon walking into the Project M space, we were at once enveloped in the womb of a pagan forest. Forest mulch covered the floor around the 200 year old olive tree, sparkling with crystals and surrounded by moss covered branches and logs. Oak branches and forest leaves surrounded the bar while dark walls perfectly highlighted the displayed artwork. We felt as if we had entered a magical land – not an exhibition space in the centre of urbanised Berlin.

With over 50 exhibiting artists, the walls were covered in paintings, drawings and sculptures depicting an empowered feminine, mother nature on all her glory. A force to be respected and valued.

Within an hour of the event opening the gallery space was so crowded that guests began to line up outside waiting for their opportunity to enter. It was so exciting to see more and more people joining us to experience the immersive exhibition!

Sincere thanks

A huge thanks to the artists who attended from far and wide: Jana Bee, Redd Walitzki, Jessica Dalva, Ciou, Ewa Prończuk-Kuziak! And to Roxanna Walitzki whom performed so beautifully. The Beautiful Bizarre Magazine team was deeply honoured to share the special night with such incredibly inspiring women.

Beautiful Bizarre Magazine is very proud to be able to support and champion female artists and an almost entirely female team through its important work.

We had such a blast talking to so many of the guests! Artists from all around Germany and Europe whom expressed their excitement and sincere thanks to Beautiful Bizarre for bringing the exhibition to Europe. Many fabulous collectors also attended and shared their love of art and vision for their personal collections with us.

Roxanna Walitzki performing

As the background music faded away, a hauntingly beautiful operatic performance by mezzo soprano Roxanna Walitzki began. From the very beginning of her musical set the crowd was mesmerised; not a word was spoken and not a body moved throughout her deeply moving performance.

After Roxanna’s performance, Beautiful Bizarre Magazine’s Editor-in-chief, Danijela Krha Purssey, shared a short but moving speech about the importance of the exhibition’s vision, then invited everyone to mingle and enjoy the open bar whilst taking in the beautiful works that surrounded us from all angles.

Danijela Krha Purssey, Beautiful Bizarre Magazine Co-Founder & Editor-in-Chief

I am personally deeply honoured and grateful to all the participating artists for creating such exceptional work for this special exhibition. This group of artists have individually and collectively brought to life an incredibly important topic – the conservation of our planet!

‘Gaia Reborn’ is a call to action – the time for change is now! To ensure we leave the next generation & those that follow a vibrant, living planet.

I would also like to thank Urban Nation Museum for Contemporary Urban Art Executive Director Yasha Young, and team, for giving myself and Beautiful Bizarre Magazine this invaluable opportunity to inspire thought, discussion, and a deeper connection with the earth through this important collection of work. Yasha and her team have gone above and beyond to help us realise our vision, and to give you the opportunity to experience this exhibition in a fully immersive way – thus providing a deeper more connective experience. One which we hope will move you to take action and help us to effect real change.

At the end of the opening reception we rounded up all the artists, collectors and Beautiful Bizarre Magazine team and made our way to a cosy bar, filling their backroom speakeasy for the after party! Cocktails were flowing, friendships deepened, new ones were born, and laughter bubbled all around us. We were surrounded by such a supportive group of people that had made our first Museum Exhibition opening night a huge success. A night we will remember always!

[Introduction and interview by Matt Mitchell. An excerpt of this interview is published in the June issue of Beautiful Bizarre Magazine] Gaia Reborn: The first museum exhibition curated by Beautiful Bizarre is a full-on immersive experience featuring 50+ artists at Berlin’s Urban Nation Museum of Urban Contemporary Art. The seed for this show was planted when the Director, Yasha Young, saw common interests between herself and Danijela Krha Purssey, Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, who has curated several exhibitions internationally.

On discussing the possibility of an exhibition Danijela and Yasha determined “Gaia Reborn” must be the theme.  All around the globe artists’ subconscious minds cannot be freed from the web of information that foretells of ecological collapse. The planet is going through a mass extinction. The ice caps are melting. Titanic gyres of plastic spin in the world’s oceans. When thinking about these problems, it became clear that a provocative approach to a show would be to imagine if they had been solved. Thus Danijela selected 50 artists and asked them to delve into a new vision: that of the triumph of the mother earth spirit.

However, this is no simple utopia.

To find out more about Gaia Reborn: A Future Utopia, enjoy our full-length, in-depth interview with the two visionaries behind the show, Danijela and Yasha.

When coming up with the theme did you expect the part about utopia to be a challenge for the artists?

Danijela: The theme ‘Gaia Reborn: A Future Utopia’ explores a critical topic: the preservation of our planet, including all the beautifully diverse and interconnected plant and animal species, and, not incidentally, ourselves. With global warming threatening to irrevocably alter the world’s delicate ecosystem, we must act now before it is too late! Humankind’s damaging effect on the environment is accelerating at an alarming rate! Sadly, over 500 species have gone extinct in the last 100 years – what a devastating testament to how we are caring for our one and only blue planet.

At this very moment, we are living through the ‘Holocene Extinction’ period, which has been largely caused by human actions; it is one of the most significant extinction events in the history of the Earth. Let’s put this into perspective; the previous extinction event, the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction, was a sudden mass extinction of some three-quarters of the plant and animal species on Earth. I think we all need to ask ourselves, what would you do to save us from the same fate?

[Recently] I was incredibly proud to see that high school students across Australia and around the world skipped class to take to the streets and demand that our Governments take action now to stop the current trajectory toward destruction. They believe the climate scientists who say we only have 12 years to make significant changes before it will be too late to save our planet and therefore ourselves. It is their future we as adults are meant to be safeguarding, so let us all – individuals, communities, societies and governments – do what we must now to make sure we leave the next generation and those that follow a vibrant, living planet.

Creatives all around the world cannot help but feel deeply about this critical global concern. Many share my passion for our planet and all the flora and fauna it nurtures, so I was delighted by the incredibly positive response I received when I invited artists to participate.

Miss Van – Moth Muse II (2019). Oil on canvas.

The ‘utopia’ aspect asks the artists to consider: how can we create a future utopia where we can tread softly on the earth, and live in harmony with its creatures, while at the same time continuing to evolve and progress as humans? What emotions would it evoke, what new and different narratives can we shape in this new utopia which honour the dynamic nature of our planet? I was thrilled to see the participating artists express the theme in both an emotional and narrative way, allowing the audience to see the true, powerful and dynamic nature of the earth – both as protector/nurturer, and destroyer, which enables new life.

I personally love this quote by Astrophysicist Brian Cox, which I think illustrates the true and deep connection we can all feel with our planet and our place in nature: “We are the cosmos made conscious, and life is the means by which the universe understands itself.” So let us wake up now, let us understand ourselves, our nature and how we can use our knowledge, experience, technology, empathy and wisdom to overcome these issues and move into our future utopia.

Kevin Peterson – Wish II (2019). Oil on panel.

Our understanding of environmental issues is based on scientific data, so it can be hard to feel these problems deeply enough so that we change our lives. Can art really help people connect to these vital issues in new ways?

Danijela: Science and data sharing are critical to informing individuals as well as Governments. Sadly, many still don’t accept these findings and find ways to overlook or dismiss the critical nature of our current environmental crisis. But artists are society’s visionaries; it is through their work that we are able to inspire thought, discussion, and a real connection with the earth on a personal and societal level.

I recently experienced firsthand the transformative power of personal connection with wild creatures and places. When my husband and I went to Tahiti on our honeymoon, there we were able to experience just one of the beautiful yet fragile places on this earth. Seeing a humpback whale mother and calf in the nursery waters of the Pacific, an endangered sea turtle swimming out to sea, coral reefs tragically damaged and bleaching, and the wild volcanic mountains and vegetation. This was when I was finally and deeply moved to not just “think about it” but do whatever I could in my power to effect change. However, we cannot all experience these natural wonders in person, so it is through the arts that we can touch people’s hearts and inspire society to make real change.

When conceptualizing their work, I asked the participating artists to consider the early religions that worshipped the earth: Gaia the earth mother. To take inspiration from this period in our early history when humanity was intimately connected with the earth, respected, and sometimes sensibly even feared her. A time when we lived and worked in harmony with our fragile planet.

Chris Berens – Sisters of Mercy (2019). Mixed media on panel.

Yasha: You have to like or love something in order to want to protect it, yet nature is removed more and more from urban life. Parks are becoming smaller as they make way for housing. Kids often don’t have that exposure to nature. Some [people] I’ve worked with have only known their backyard, or the sandbox in kindergarten, as a part of nature. By creating an exhibition with a see-hear-smell-feel, multi-sensory component, we aim to educate and even evoke an emotional response and prolonged interest [in nature]. This kind of curatorial experimentation is exactly what our Project M Space is about.

My own experience of nature has led me to want to protect it. The blueberry fields I walked through in my childhood held some of my fondest memories – but they are long gone now.

Often, today’s kids don’t have those organically developed memories. Their parents may not even have the means to give them vacations. We, the prior generations, need to be the keepers of the collective memories and raise awareness for them. Thankfully many artists dedicate their work to environmental and social issues. However, if that art is only seen on social media it can become just another part of our swipe-fast-and-forget-fast world. An exhibition is a different situation. People often stay for 60 to 75 minutes looking at artwork and reading about the vision behind it. Discussions often start with other viewers, as well as with curators and even artists that are present. The bottom line is, I think that direct contact with all of our senses and everything that makes us human can start long-term thought processes and activate possible chain reactions and change.

Urban Nation is focussed on street art; how does this connect with the artistic vision of Beautiful Bizarre?

Yasha: Urban Nation is a Museum not focussed solely on street art, it never was. Street art belongs in and to the streets. What I exhibit are many things that are connected to street art.

Some of the work featured in Beautiful Bizarre is art that I was showing in my former gallery in the early 2000’s. At the time, it was considered pop surrealism. Now it has grown into something else, and will continue to grow naturally into the next category that the art world can come up with.

In today’s contemporary art world, artists are very free to quickly shift between genres. The Urban Nation Museum is interested in supporting artists regardless of where they come from, what stage their career is at, and whether they are self-taught or not. We support artists in meaningful and long-term ways, such as our 11 residencies. When we support artists in this way, we hope that we can further break down the still existing boundaries between the so-called traditional art world and the great variety of strong contemporary movements that exist.

Natalia Fabia – Biała Koza (2018). Oil on linen.

The theme of Gaia evokes images of female power as well as the environment. Street [and its connected] art seems to still be a male dominated field. Do you think that’s going to change?

Yasha: I think it’s important to say that the UN doesn’t archive street art only. Also, I know many, many successful female artists that have been working in the streets and outside for a long time.

In my opinion, we are now seeing a massive development in the female sector of the contemporary art scene. This has to do with new feminist movements. Social media makes it possible for more voices to be heard – voices that have always been there! I encourage and support this wherever I can.

Still, the never-ending disadvantages that women face are real. I am a woman and I have achieved a lot. I have worked hard and I am proud, but I still personally experience the ever present force of inequality on a daily basis. Yet, I believe we’re breaking these issues open. I think that society as a whole is starting to evolve and equal opportunity is no longer just a wish – it is a must in today’s world. Of course, I hope we’re going to see a change in that aspect in all professions.

Ciou – Cosmic Egg (2019). Mixed media (acrylic, ink, paper on wood).

Vipoo – Gaia (2019). Porcelain and mix media.

The name of the type of art in the Gaia Reborn exhibition is hard to pin down. Urban Contemporary is possibility, I know Danijela has suggested another name, New Contemporary Art.  If I may be so bold, I would like to propose another name I find helpful.  I call it Free Contemporary Art because it is art that has been freed in so many ways. It has been liberated by social media to create its own economies and audiences. Free Contemporary artists want their viewers to be free of reading things in order to understand the work. They want to be free of art world jargon and art world attitude.

Names aside, the more important issue is that this genre of art is absolutely on the rise. It is massively popular.  Where do you think this movement is headed?  How will it grow and become more deep and rich?

Danijela: Indeed, the nomenclature of this art movement is still up for debate. I do, however, love Free Contemporary Art – it evokes the freedom that current living artists are embracing outside of the dictates of the traditional fine art establishment. Another name that a Gallerist friend Joseph Weinreb suggested when we visited Haven Gallery in Northport, New York, still resonates with me: Contemporary Renaissance – because it is a re-emergence, or renaissance, of figurative/representational art, but inclusive of new styles including pop surrealism and low brow art.

Terminology aside, I, like many artists, collectors and art lovers are bored with conceptual and abstract art. Tired of walking into galleries and looking at rooms with walls filled with work that doesn’t create any sort of personal connection with the viewer. The sort of art that high end art galleries and museums were sharing with the public was turning us off art, rather than inspiring us.

Yousuke Kawashima – Edda (2019). Oil paint on Japanese paper on panel.

I think this quote from Beautiful Bizarre Magazine cover artist Malcolm T Liepke sums up the overwhelming feeling of the current new generation of artists about conceptual and abstract art: “I saw a piece of art one time and I didn’t like and didn’t understand what I saw, but next to the painting was a page long description of what I was supposed to get from it. I remember thinking ‘this person should have been a writer!…”

Thankfully the internet and particularly social media have enabled artists, collectors and art lovers to have their own voices heard. To say, “This is what we want to see on our feeds, in our galleries, and on our walls!” has taken many years, but high-end art galleries and museums around the world are finally beginning to listen to this collective voice. Take the National Gallery of Victoria’s (NGV) recent Triennial exhibition; it was a risky move for the Director to focus on contemporary representational art and design in a still very traditional Australian market, but it was wildly successful drawing almost 1.3 million visitors! So successful in fact, that the Victorian government is now going to build the largest contemporary art gallery in Australia in Melbourne, NGV Contemporary.

The new generation of collectors has spoken loudly and clearly. The Contemporary Renaissance has begun!

Yasha: The very closed doors of the traditional art world and its boundaries have been forced open. Everything is changing rapidly: gallery exhibitions, the way museums work, the way people collect art, art fairs.

However, I do believe that the faster we become, the greater the risk of losing the ability to focus on the creative process. At the moment, the main focus of my work has been to try to find ways to slow down the actual process of creation and output in the future. This discussion of social media also raises other issues. It may not actually be beneficial for an artist to be their own social media manager, their own PR agency, and their own dealer. Ideally an artist should be able to focus on making art, having the opportunity to be surrounded by people that have those above-mentioned tools to properly execute what is needed.

Social media can actually have negative effects.  I’m watching this phenomenon with a very careful eye. I am trying to bring back some old-school one-on-one interaction as part of the development from the beginning to the end of an artwork.

Therein lies an important freedom of art and the creative mind.

ONEQ – NYORO (2019). Acrylic painting on wood panel.

Ellen Jewett – “Of decay and adaptation (strange and gentle XXI)” (2019). Mixed media (air drying polymer, cold porcelain, resin, metal, acrylic, mineral pigment).

Jasmine Becket-Griffith – Silent Wisdom (2019). Acrylic on masonite.

Jessica Dalva – As Dusk Would Fall (2019). Mixed media sculpture on wooden base.
