Utilising dynamic flow and a keen eye for colour theory, Kai & Sunny’s works masterfully interpret themes from nature and translate them into intricate, stylized linework. One of the things I find most impressive is their ability to maintain the essence of their original inspirations. Though reinterpreted into an entirely new visual language of geometric lines, you can still feel the sense of calm and, ultimately, nature, as you look upon their acrylic painted lines.

The flow of air, water and landscapes often come to my mind, yet part of the beauty lies in the openness of interpretation to each individual viewer. In Spirited Away, Kai & Sunny focus on the visual and emotive elements of kinetic flow, delving deeper into a sense of otherworldly exploration. Debuting this Saturday 21 September at Corey Helford Gallery, this new body of work – including a selection of collaborative pieces with other world-renowned artists – will offer a space for regenerative introspection. In such a busy non-stop world, such opportunities should not be missed.

I’m fascinated by the power of the natural world and, with these works, I wanted to explore those precious unseen moments such as the frequencies within nature. My aim is to immerse the viewer within forces of nature, and use colour, light, and movement to transport them through a journey of courage. At points in our lives, we may change, possibly losing pieces of ourselves in the process. Even with this obstacle, there is still hope ahead, and letting go frees us to move forward.

Spirited Away (acrylic painting on linen, 60.25 in x 87.75 in) by Kai & Sunny

Kai & Sunny has received international acclaim for Kai’s meticulous use of acrylic paint to create a spectrum of razor-thin coloured lines on linen canvas. It’s hard to appreciate the sheer scale of some of these paintings (see below for some more studio shots!).

To add to the enchantment, collaboration has always been a core ethos of the artist’s practice. In line with this, a section of Spirited Away has been specially dedicated to the idea of “UNITY, and will feature collaborative works by Shepard FaireyD*Face, and Kai Clements. “Their individual yet complementary styles have developed over time alongside their friendships, starting from a shared college experience between D*Face and Clements and an ongoing collaboration with Fairey since 2013. Each of these artists is inspired by nature, relationships, and the politics of the world, making their work together a natural fit and compelling display.” Shares Corey Helford Gallery.

And there is more!

Alongside the canvases, Spirited Away will also feature two digital artworks. Designed in collaboration with England-based 3D Design and Animation Studio Fakery, the works are carefully choreographed against an ambient soundtrack composed by the Emmy-nominated English duo Toydrum (featuring Pablo Clements and James Griffith). Additionally, Kai & Sunny is releasing a limited-edition silkscreen print and two skateboard decks in collaboration with Element, featuring artwork from the show.

Open to the public and free of charge, Spirited Away will exhibit in the Main Gallery, alongside two solo exhibits featuring new works by Los Angeles-based artist Andrea Guzzetta, titled Afterglow, and Korean artist Kiseok Kim, titled Plastic, both in Gallery 3. The shows will be on view through October 26th.

Andrew Hosner discusses the history and ethos behind the collection and Thinkspace LA

True Trailblazers within the art community

From press release: The Hosners simultaneously rallied a heartful community of like minds while building a remarkable collection that represents a wide swath of bold contemporary artists – many of whom have since become internationally recognized.

Beginning with a small work by Jeff Soto that they purchased in the 2000s for around $300, the Hosners together evolved into inveterate collectors who championed emerging artists in what they call the New Contemporary Art movement, including Neo-Pop, street art and graffiti, art collectibles, and contemporary ceramics.

They co-founded Thinkspace in 2005, operating from a space in the Silver Lake neighbourhood’s bustling Sunset Junction and eventually relocating to Culver City in 2021. As both collectors and gallerists, the Hosners have been more likely to set market trends than follow them: “The first rule of buying for us, and myself moving forward, will always be you have to like it,” says Andrew Hosner. “We’ve never really tried to buy simply because of a name.”

Banksy: Parachuting Rat

The Banksy: Parachuting Rat

A couple of the marquee works in the auction are works from the UK artist Banksy. The first is a really special piece, since there’s really not been many to come to market over the years: his iconic Parachuting Rat image. Which, by and large, he really only did on the streets. When Shawn and I got married in 2005, we did a really simple ceremony because that was Shawn in a nutshell. The following week we decided to have a little soiree at the house to celebrate […] and everyone had brought very nice little knickknacks and gifts, even though we told them not to.

Definitely the coolest thing that we had gotten was gifted to us by our close friends, who at the time owned and operated the Lab 101 Gallery. Evan and Freddie brought us over a work on cardboard of the parachuting rat from Banksy, who at the time was super cool and underground. They brought it over and they were like, ‘Hey, this is from not too long ago when Banksy was in town and he did that little pop up show here in LA […] he stayed with us and bombed on some pieces, and this is actually on a piece of cardboard from where Evan used to work.’”

Other Collection highlights

Undoubtedly, many of the artists whose works the Hosners showed and collected have become important. Highlights include Banksy’s 2002 Parachuting Rat (est. $40,000–60,000], Jen Stark’s 2011 sculpture Beyond Finite (est. $20,000–30,000), the figurative drawings Words of Wisdom from Javier Calleja (est. $20,000–40,000) and The Street (Sketch) from Mark Ryden. A group of works from Roby Dwi Antono include the 2022 Love Me Do (Study) (est. $20,000–30,000) and the 2021 sculpture Asteria (est. $10,000–15,000), which was exhibited at the Thinkspace exhibition Epos.

Though hesitant to apply any one label to their collection, Hosner does note that it skews toward the figurative. This propensity shows up everywhere across the collection, from Audrey Kawasaki’s 2008 panel As I Fall (est. $15,000–25,000) to Betye Saar’s Floating Doll with Ball in the Galaxy (est. $10,000–15,000), as well as works from KAWS, Hebru Brantley, Swoon, Edgar Plans and others. The collection also shows an affinity for the “Beautiful Losers” group, with works from Shepard Fairey, Margaret Kilgallen, Barry McGee, and Ed Templeton. Leading lots of the sale include Kilgallen’s mixed-media Untitled (Fawk-Fate) (est. $20,000–$40,000) and Shephard Fairey’s 2017 Damaged Pig Painted (est. $15,000–20,000).

The Hosners have also been avid fans of ceramic sculpture, by both canonized makers and emerging ones alike. Richard Pettibone’s 1962 Untitled (est. $4,000–6,000) and Peter Shire’s Untitled (Cup) ($800–1,000) accompany ceramic works from new generations, with examples from Josh Cloud, Sharif Farrag, Raven Halfmoon, En Iwamura, Kazuhito Kawai, Grant Levy-Lucero, Narumi Nekpenekpen, Brian Rochefort, Maryam Yousif, and others.

Alongside ceramics are a range of works from emerging LA artists working in paint and mixed media, including Shizu Saldamando, Jeremy Shockley, and others.

A significant chapter for both LA culture and contemporary art

Talking about his decision to bring this collection to auction, Andrew Hosner shares: “I felt that it was more important to keep the gallery going and all that comes with it: the community, our extended gallery family, and all of our ‘children’ that are the artists that we’ve supported over the years, that they continue to have a place to exist and nurture and grow and support each other… that ultimately is the best legacy that I could ask for, for Shawn.”

Works featured in The Collection of Shawn & Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace LA and The Collection of Shawn & Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace LA: Online Only will be on view September 9th – 12th at LAMA’s new location at 6666 Lexington Ave, Los Angeles.

We are huge fans of miniature artist Abigail Goldman’s complexly provoking 1:87 scale dioramas. Merging everyday situations with often-gory scenes, you’ll double take her instantly recognisable works, encouraging you to reflect on the deeper meaning behind the brutality and darker side of humanity on show. Seriously: there’s a lot to unpack in her tiny dramas. Aptly referred to as “die-o-ramas” by the artist herself, there’s something in the effortlessly cute miniature scale and at-first-glance everyday scenes which offers a blanket of additional charm through which to process her surreal narratives. Juxtaposition is a fine tool to encourage further reflection, and Abigail Goldman wields it beautifully.

As well as her Quick Q+A feature in the upcoming September issue #46 of Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, Abigail is currently enjoying her latest solo show at Hashimoto Contemporary in New York. Her solo State of Nature runs until 31st August, so there is still time to catch her works in person and enjoy her latest series of works.

State of Nature is “brutally honest about taboo violent fantasies buried under social contracts”, inviting us to explore what our own actions may be like without societies’ laws stabilising the world around us. How moral are we, really? How much may our behaviours change if laws collapsed, and our current reality fell to total chaos? Complete with interactive lights – even in a cooking fire slow roasting a body – Abigail’s die-o-ramas are a darkly entertaining treat.

State of Nature with Hashimoto Contemporary explores the brutal impulses typically suppressed in everyday life on a 1:87 scale. Goldman uses her bloody miniature die-o-ramas not to shock, but to present complex and seemingly absurd narratives of human compulsions that bubble below the surface.

From press release //

Arguments about true human nature are a cornerstone of the Western philosophical canon. Optimists like John Locke believed life before governmental rule was a magnanimous paradise, while pessimists like Thomas Hobbes believed life before a ruler was “nasty, brutish, and short.” Washington-based miniaturist Abigail Goldman leans begrudgingly towards the latter.

Beyond the usual empty fields or rocky cliff sides, Goldman’s newest narratives of humans in their brutish natural state occur inside picturesque homes, fine dining restaurants, and even Buckingham Palace. Figures no larger than a pinky-fingernail spill and ooze blood, consume human flesh, and execute their houseguests among pleasant interiors. Perhaps due to their size or the elements of surprise, the gory incidents are laced with dark humour. There’s always something funny about elderly women in their Sunday finest breaking from expected composure.

Goldman imagines these images of ordinary, respectable people lashing out or giving into their urges as cathartic – it’s something you didn’t know you needed until you had it.

While the exhibition’s title refers to a time before human governance, Goldman clarifies that there are governing forces similar to ours in these miniature worlds:

“We’re generally polite. We stand in line. We signal to turn,” she writes. “We mostly follow the rules. But we’re fraying at the edges and a certain kind of madness is setting in. If people find any truth in my work, perhaps it’s seeing subterranean feelings suddenly come to the surface.”

About the Gallery //

Hashimoto Contemporary is a contemporary art gallery originally founded in 2013 by Ken Harman Hashimoto. In 2023 the gallery announced two new partners, Dasha Matsuura and Jennifer Rizzo. Their roster consists of an eclectic blend of emerging and mid-career contemporary artists. Hashimoto Contemporary provides a platform for artists whose identities and subjects have been historically relegated to the margins, as well as artists whose practices fit neatly into the canon of art history. You can find their galleries at the Minnesota Street Project (San Francisco), the Lower East Side (New York City) and Culver City (Los Angeles) where their three spaces organize new exhibitions monthly.

About the artist Abigail Goldman //

Abigail Goldman’s artistic practice centers around miniature scenes of gruesome murders in plastic and acrylic. Dubbing her works “die-o-ramas,” Goldman’s miniature sculptures are rendered in 1:87 scale -each tiny figure is well under an inch tall, making them grotesque but familiar, grim but cute. The work’s diminutive size contrasts with the larger-than-life tableaus of gore and mayhem rendered within.

Though many of the narratives in Goldman’s scenes seem like something pulled from fiction, the artist draws almost exclusively from her professional life, where she witnesses and researches the “escalating feedback loop of rage and violence” present in American culture. At once adorable and offensive, Goldman’s “die-o-ramas” explore our relationship to violence – its omnipresence and resulting banality, as well as our innate attraction to the grisly and macabre.

Abigail Goldman’s miniatures have been exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work has been featured by numerous media outlets, including the LA Times, New York Times, NPR, Atlas Obscura, Juxtapoz, and Huffington Post, and the September 2024 issue #46 of Beautiful Bizarre Magazine. In March 2019, Goldman and her work were the subject of a documentary produced for Topic Magazine.

Quarantine Events Brutally Honest Oracle: your art questions answered, no holds barred https://beautifulbizarre.net/2024/08/12/quarantine-events-brutally-honest/ Mon, 12 Aug 2024 12:33:11 +0000 https://beautifulbizarre.net/?p=172874 “Social media is broken” declares Quarantine Events. Looking for a better way to build an art community, they've built The Brutally Honest Oracle.

The post Quarantine Events Brutally Honest Oracle: your art questions answered, no holds barred appeared first on Beautiful Bizarre Magazine.

]]>
“Social media is broken.” declares Darren Green, co-founder of Quarantine Events. This single – but significant – idea has been the driving force for Quarantine Events to review everything. How can they best connect with like-minded artists and help creatives who need it? How can they continue to build an international community, a place where artists seeking answers can access honest advice far away from judgement, and AI bots policing their every post? The answer unveiled itself – and the Brutally Honest Oracle was born.

The concept is simple: to get back to the roots of direct communication. You ask a (preferably genuine, from the soul) question, you get a (no holds barred, brutally honest) answer from their oracles, made up of their highly experienced coaches and mentors.

For this to work, Quarantine Events has thrown social media far out of the picture. They have returned to a delectable source of communication void of third-party control and data scraping. They have returned to the ever-surviving form of the bespoke newsletter. And that’s right – it’s free! Get ready for the Brutally Honest Oracle answering your artistic questions every fortnight.

The twist

Of course, this wouldn’t be Quarantine Events without a twist. At the heart of their incentive to provide a safe space where questions can be answered with truth, there lies an “indispensable quality for this oracle to work”: the answers must all be anonymous.

Each question chosen promises to be answered by one or more oracles, allowing artists to receive multiple points of view. Sometimes contradictory, always opening the mind, the anonymous oracles promise to give you their informed advice based on years of expertise.

The-brutally-honest-oracle

You will never know who’s on the other side of the crystal ball. If you knew which mentor was responding, the oracle would be corrupted, just like social media.

Why the anonymity?

If you have managed to go through life using the internet and never once been on the receiving end of some unwarranted offence, you are one of the rare few. From people being ridiculed for asking genuine questions to response videos based on someone else’s response video, the internet – and especially social media – is often a knotted loop of knee-jerk opinions and ego topped with a sprinkling of finely distributed unnecessary criticism.

There are, of course, well maintained “safe spaces”; closely monitored online communities with rules and regulations to instil order and security. These can be shining beacons for like-minded individuals and provide positive experiences. But there will always be capacity for uninvited voices to ruin the vibe within any public platform where genuine conversations may be trying to take place. In the world of social media, every piece of ourselves that we put out there is laid bare for others to do with as they wish. It can be vulnerable and draining. But there is another way. As the Quarantine Events team put it: “email lets us keep our dignity”.

This anonymity also works both ways; those asking the questions can also stay anonymous when submitting. The beauty is that this concept focuses on what matters most: the exchange of knowledge.

There’ll be delightful chaos, contradiction, and paradox. It’s an Oracle! But answers will always be informed and from the experienced.

What kind of questions can be asked?

While artists are encouraged to use their common sense when drafting questions, there is no limit to what – or how many questions – can be asked. “An honest answer requires an honest question. So, be brutally sincere.” Suggests Carles Gomila, Artist & Quarantine Events Director.

“Ask anything about using fear and vulnerability to make art. Anything about the creative process. Anything about how to be an artist. Anything about art education… Just don’t be annoying, and use common sense.” Says their handy FAQ.

The team will be grouping answers for the Brutally Honest Oracle by theme, so with Oracles giving their answers every fortnight, you may have to be patient. Rest assured, however, that each newsletter will have plenty to inspire you.

You don’t need to ask a question to be a part of the Quarantine Events Community

If you’re feeling apprehensive about getting involved, it’s important to remember that the Quarantine team welcome all curious creatives. You don’t even need to input a question to enjoy the Oracle newsletter; just sign up via their website and wait for the fun to glide into your inbox! From exploring self-identity neurosis to career advice and everything in between, the Brutally Honest Oracles are here to guide you, free of judgement.

As someone who receives hundreds of emails a day, sometimes it is hard not to feel overwhelmed when I open my inbox. Believe me when I say that the Brutally Honest Oracle is a breath of fresh air. These oracles’ answers will make your brain tick and fizz. Maybe you’ll be inspired to overcome an internal block or two.

We can all do with a little nudge to bring more art into our lives.

Shane Pierce: ‘Eerie Musings’

Shane Pierce’s ‘Eerie Musings’ continues the narrative theme of Shane’s dark travellers, night watchers and passengers. “Traveling all over the United States, carrying with him his own personal baggage of memories and experiences, he paints a different world into existence.” describes Evan Senn. “Dark and ominous creatures, emotional weight, honesty and experience ring loudly throughout his paintings. Dark traveling characters bombard his imagination, and his artwork, angels and grim reapers haunt his creations in subtle ways, while the rough and raw American landscape keep his nomads company on their seemingly lonesome and aimless journeys.

“His artwork is as unique and haunting as he is. A storyteller at his core, his creations are hypnotic, drawing the viewer in and plaguing them with interest and intrigue. A cloaked man, with determination and fury across his brow, often paired with a suitcase and a pipe, ventures to the dark and unknown places of his imagination. Constantly followed by the shadows, Pierce’s nomads travel with fervour, unafraid of what lies ahead, or behind them.”

Tin: ‘XOXO’

Tin’s earliest influences in childhood were comic books and fantasy cartoons like “Star blazers”. “I sketched from time to time and did OK in high school art class then I decided to become a fisherman. The dangerous kind like out of the movie “Perfect Storm”. I almost died three times and should have lost my drawing hand at least a dozen times. After my last close call with death, I decided to become an artist. I didn’t look at art as a career though until I was 22”. Tin began doing commercial work and soon burnt out on it.

I was just going through the motions and creating things that didn’t challenge me anymore. One day I was finishing a pin-up girl and I remember saying out loud to myself “If I only had a heart” which reminded me of the Tin Man in “Wizard of Oz”. That moment I decided to do more interesting works and call myself Tin.

Tin

His main influences are Steampunk, a sub genre of fantasy and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne.

Richard Ahnert: ‘The View From Here’

Richard Ahnert’s “The View From Here” is a whimsical collection capturing animals in unexpected, out-of-context situations. With a voyeuristic quality and understated humour, each painting blends the familiar with the surreal.

Richard graduated with honours from the Arts York Program at Unionville HS with a Major in Visual Arts and went on to study Technical Illustration and Graphic Design at York University and Seneca College, graduating with the Presidents Honor Roll for Highest Academic Achievement. With a drive to explore and evolve as an artist, he continues studies and workshops ongoing to help define his style and practice. His work has won awards and can be found in private collections and businesses around the world.

Richard was also a 2018 Beautiful Bizarre Magazine Art Prize Finalist; read more about Richard here!

Rachael Bridge: ‘Wallflowers’

Issue 32 artist Rachael Bridge’s new solo ‘Wallflowers’ explores the idea of wanting to be invisible all the time – working more as an observer than an actor day to day. Each piece depicts figures caught in a strange void in their dreamlike and nightmarish surroundings, capturing both vulnerable and content feelings. Rachael Bridge has a unique take on traditional portraiture. She can be considered a master of the macabre, an artist whose portraits embody the terrors of the human mind drawing on the viewers’ proclivity for fear, and masterfully using her style to pull us into her dark and symbolic world. At first glance, Rachael Bridge’s work feels almost sinister. Her depictions of women are corpse-like and otherworldly. She uses horror to depict complexities of the human psyche with themes of anxiety, isolation, seduction, and despair.

Rachael obtained her BFA in 2010 from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY and now lives and works in New Jersey. Rachael will be present at the opening!

EGO: ‘NONENTITY’

NonEntity is EGO’s latest series of small works. He continues to investigate transitional states of being that border on the edges of this reality. The figures in these paintings are seemingly solitary outsiders, representing ghostly apparitions that may not exist, or barely glimpsed visions of the dead. Yet seen another way, these works may highlight those who are considered unimportant and/or overlooked by society. Using classical painting techniques to conjure intricately crafted portraits of macabre yet whimsical solitary outsiders, Ego feels a kind of kinship with these characters, as a socially-awkward extroverted introvert himself. The seemingly melancholy, yet somehow also charming figures he dreams up appear to dwell in the spaces somewhere between the natural and metaphysical worlds. In his work there is often a juxtaposition between the grim and endearing, the modern and classical, the real and the surreal.

A self-taught painter, Ego’s distinctive style is informed by a lifelong fascination with popular culture (movies, music, comics, skateboarding, etc.), as well as a profound appreciation for the work of classical masters. From the masters he’s adapted the nuanced rendering of light and shadow, as well as the study of anatomy which he bends to fit the uniquely distorted nature of the denizens of his imaginary world. Living in the Pacific Northwest also influences the tone of his work. For a large portion of the year it’s dark and rainy. While many find this depressing, Ego feels the gloom contributes to a lush and hazy landscape that seeps into the colours and subjects of his paintings. Through experimenting with different mediums, the technique which ultimately developed emulates the smoothness, depth and richness of oil paintings, using acrylic paint. Ego has shared these specialized techniques by teaching classes and workshops, as well as mentoring aspiring artists.

Known for his incredible and vibrant art, UK-based artist Matt Taylor has worked with numerous major clients to create visual delights celebrating classic and pop culture favourites. In recent years, his unique style led him to create much sought-after movie posters, trading cards, and even comic book covers. Earlier this year, contemporary art gallery Spoke Art commissioned Matt Taylor to create a special tribute poster honouring the Studio Ghibli gem, “Kiki’s Delivery Service”; a Japanese animated film by Hayao Miyazaki, this is a well-loved classic!

In this special editorial, Matt Taylor takes us on a journey through his process, sharing a few secrets from his research stage and right through to the end result. Available now as a limited edition screen printed poster, we hope you enjoy this behind the scenes – thank you Matt for sharing!

Matt Taylor: the making of Kiki’s Delivery Service movie poster for Spoke Art

Preparation

For any movie poster, the first step for me is watching the film. I’ll pop it on and watch with a notepad to hand, usually writing down notes and thoughts about the film, but also some small thumbnail sketches if an idea comes to mind as well as time codes for scenes that I feel might be worth revisiting.

For Kiki, my initial thought was that I wanted something to communicate with the poster was the hustle and bustle of the piece – Kiki working in the shop, making friends and growing as a person. Obviously, there’s no scene in the movie where everyone is in shot at the same time, so I thought I’d build one, with the key cast going about their day and Kiki off on one of her errands.

With animated movies, I feel like it’s really important to stay on model to the character designs and backgrounds so that it feels recognisable. Ghibli has such a strong aesthetic to its films, it would be mad not to try and capture that. When I made my Akira poster for Spoke Art back in 2022, I created the layout solely from collaged screenshots, which I could use as the guide for my drawing, and it felt like this was the right choice for this piece too.

Matt-Taylor-KIKI-screenshot
Matt-Taylor-KIKI-screenshots1

Thankfully there’s a bounty of websites devoted to screenshots from movies, so I went through the film shot by shot and grabbed a whole bunch of images that featured poses or elements that stood out to me. Once I had them all, I created a new canvas in Photoshop and set to work.

Building from the blank canvas: the importance of typography

The first thing I wanted to nail down was the title treatment. With any movie poster I work on, type is always the starting point. At the end of the day, a poster is a tool for communication, and if you can’t see what the title of the movie is then you’re not making a good poster.

I had an idea that I wanted something big and bold to run through the center of the image (I’ve been increasingly drawn towards large dynamic title treatments this year). I wanted to have most of the text in Japanese with just the title repeated in English. I hate working on a white canvas, so I threw the blue in there as a base color – mainly because it’s the color of the Ghibli title card and was fresh in my head. This turned out to be unexpectedly fortuitous because it unexpectedly presented the idea for a variant colorway, but I’ll get to that in a minute.

Matt-Taylor-KIKI-letterhead

Experimenting with image placement

Once the type was locked in place, I started to place the screen grabbed images from the movie around the page. I found a nice unobscured view of the shop to serve as the centerpiece of the poster and then experimented with placing different elements around the page to see where they felt right. I’d like to say there’s some logic and mystery to this stage but it’s really just a case of moving things around until they feel ‘right’.

Matt-Taylor-KIKI-prep1

Linework

When I had enough of the key pieces in place to begin drawing, I started to put in fairly loose but detailed linework – there’s nothing worse than when you’re making a finished painting and you come across a section that you really didn’t think through at the sketch stage! Once this was done, I basically had my finished line sketch.

Usually I would start throwing some color on, but when I took a step back I realised that the black line on blue looked just like a Ghibli title card and it was great! There was no way that it would be the regular colorway of the poster, but I sent it over as it was to gauge what Ken and John at Spoke Art thought about it.

They liked it! And because we’ve been working together for more than ten years, they trusted me when I said ‘I’ll figure out the actual colors for it when I’m painting’ – for which I’m always grateful. Having that trust with a long running partnership really makes the whole process so much easier.

Making the final design

Once the sketch was signed off, it was just a case of making the final art. This piece was a little different because I wanted to match the visual style of the anime, which meant everything has a black outline around it – something I don’t always do. With a view on avoiding nasty surprises down the line, I drew the entire piece as an outline first – moving a few elements from the sketch and substituting a couple of characters as well.

Generally I draw each character in a separate group on Photoshop so I can move them around. I’ll usually draw a little extra of any characters that fall behind others, so I have some flexibility to move them around. Once the art is moving towards a finished state you see things that aren’t obvious at sketch – usually, lines meeting each other awkwardly, or areas of similar colors next to each other that make it hard to read – so having the ability to adjust without having to repaint it is super helpful. I try to make my art as modular as possible without it feeling too stiff or awkward.

Matt-Taylor-KIKI-character-art
Matt-Taylor-character-poster-art

Once the line art was complete, I moved to the coloring. Because each character was in their own group I could paint quite loosely – mixing up tones and textures without worrying about painting outside the lines. In terms of the actual painting, there’s no real explanation other than ‘I just painted it’. So much of it is intuitive by this point – moving textures around and constantly editing as new components are finished so that everything feels harmonious. I’ll usually just work on a piece until it feels ‘right’.

I set a rough palette of contrasting colors in the swatch menu so I could swap colors quickly when painting. Instead of using traditional grey values, I cheated slightly and used colors that are higher contrast. This way you can have an image that from a value point of view is almost the same tone, but your eye reads the contrast and the whole thing can remain really bright and vibrant. I think from a color-theory perspective it’s not the best way to work, but it’s where I’ve landed!

My defaults when I’m painting are blues, pinks and oranges, with maybe a pop of bright yellow. Oftentimes I’ll use adjustment layers to change the finished piece once I’m done, but in this case, it felt like I’d really captured the mood of the movie without simply aping the palette of the film.

Matt-Taylor-spoke-art-Kiki-design

Once the color is added it’s then just a case of looking at the whole piece and picking out any errors – usually, areas where the contrast between the foreground and background isn’t clear and making sure all the type is legible. I’ll often paint the amends on a single layer on top of the artwork because at this point everything below it is locked and it’s faster to add the last details to everything at once.

Because I spent a long time on the sketch making sure it was readable, there weren’t really that many edits to make; in spite of its relative complexity, it was a pretty straightforward piece to paint. Planning made it so much easier than other pieces that I’ve only had a very vague idea of what they would look like when they’re done…

And that’s about it!

We are long-term fans of Issue 31 artist Soey Milk; her expressive paintings capture a depth and energy which mirror her own vibrant personality. Utilising bold brushworks alongside the smooth and gentle tones of her subjects, Soey Milk creates more than just playful juxtapositions. Her eye-catching paintings offer an enrichment of cultural unifications reflecting her Korean roots as much as her American upbringing. Her upcoming solo exhibition at Corey Helford Gallery, LIANAS celebrates her deeper exploration into her intertwining cultural identities. Featuring opulent colours, florals, elegant figures and even baby tigers, LIANAS will be a true feast for the eyes.

“In the delicate dance between tradition and metamorphosis, the tendrils of Milk’s visual narrative intertwine like sinuous vines of lianas, reaching back to the fertile soil of heritage while embracing the vibrant hues of contemporary expression.” Shares Corey Helford Gallery. “Like tendrils seeking perches on ancient trees, Milk draws sustenance from the rich tapestry of cultural history, weaving its threads into the fabric of her own. With each brushstroke, she strives to ascend toward greater understanding, guided by the wisdom of the past and inspired by the beauty of the present moment.

“In […] LIANAS, visitors are invited to wander through this verdant labyrinth of tradition and growth, where the roots of Milk’s creative lineage entwine with the blossoms of modern expression.”

About Soey Milk (from press release):

Born in 1989 in Seoul, Korea, Milk moved to Los Angeles at age 11. She earned her BFA from The Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA. Milk’s early path was leading her to become a ballerina, but after she was first introduced to painting, she forthwith found a new passion to pursue. Some of the ballet dimensions remained, as she was still strongly drawn to human anatomy, which was a cornerstone for the development of her painterly pursuits.

A versatile artist, Milk works primarily with oils and watercolours to create an outstanding narrative universe that is at once tender and strange. Characterized by the high level of meticulousness, attentiveness to details, and powerful combinations of colours and shapes, her work evokes a certain level of sensibility and mysteriousness, floating between realism and abstraction. The porcelain faces of her often-nude muses reveal an interior less innocent and pure than we are led to believe at first glance.

Milk’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, in addition to being featured in JuxtapozBeautiful Bizarre MagazineAmerican Art CollectorHi-Fructose, and on multiple online platforms. In 2017, she was commissioned by John Mayer to create the cover and sleeve art to his album The Search for Everything. Milk lives and works in Los Angeles.

Call me theatrical, but when I think about the Quarantine Events team, I often think about charismatic plate spinners. Not your standard talent-show performers, though – think a sprinkling of Cirque du Soleil; enigmatic, outside-the-box visionaries bringing you something that you didn’t even know you needed. Wrap this image up in your mind and tie it with a bow of artistic intent. If you’re still with me at this point, congratulations – at least someone is! – let us see what other plates are still spinning at Quarantine Events…

Applications are now closed for Quarantine Events’ final 2024 programme on Lazaretto Island in Menorca, and while they prepare for the incredible October 2024 INTERZONE, Carles Gomila and the team are already finalizing details for their first 2025 adventure. Their week-long workshop in 2025 promises to be both unique and exhilarating, heavily inspired from the timeless wisdom of “The Art Spirit” by Robert Henri. Delving into multiple explorations of the core principles and philosophies encapsulated within this influential book, The Art Spirit event will unveil a transformative one-week experience that blends artistic technique with profound personal insight.

Schools and workshops all focus on “HOW to make art?”. They teach you techniques to make you great. Cool. No complaints here -they’re not the villains.

But no-one asks the big question: “WHY do you make art?”

Robert Henri tackles this in “The Art Spirit,” and so do we. It’s the tough question everyone dodges, but it’s key to being a real, free artist.

Carles Gomila, Artist & Quarantine Events Director

“The Art Spirit,” first published in 1923, is more than just a guide on painting; it is a passionate manifesto on the nature of creativity, art, and the artist’s place in the world. This holistic book has become a bible to many creatives over the decades, including Issue 033 cover artist Jeremy Mann – so much so, that he has agreed to return as a mentor at Quarantine Events to share his own lived-in practices of Robert Henri’s significant teachings.

A great panacea to the troubles which plague mankind

“This book helps put our doubts and wonders, the feelings all artists have across many mediums, into words – and spits it back at you with a smack to the senses. It wakes you up… and could be read daily like the vespers of religions,” muses Jeremy. “While I draw my mentalities from many such great books, and there are many other inspiring books akin to this one, Henri’s vision captured in his writings and other’s notes on his teachings make complete sense to me.”

In-line with Quarantine Events’ ethos of breaking down limitations instigated by the traditional Teacher-Student relationship, mentors for this event won’t be teaching the “right way” to be an artist. For Quarantine Events, there is no such thing.

Their week-long programmes celebrate individual creativity, as such working in perfect harmony with “The Art Spirit” publication. Jeremy agrees: “Luckily, we’re not some sort of prophets preaching this one man’s words, rather it’s an affinity for the philosophy as is interpreted through each of our own completely different experiences. Guidance comes best from those who know their subject and are willing to be honest about every aspect, so I will draw my confidence from that, and be honest no matter how stupid my doubts tell me I could be. I will be doing my best to light those little fires of the art spirit under the asses of all who attend; a little light to carry onward!”

The Art Spirit is like the field guide to all wandering lost souls. Much underappreciated in my opinion, but good in the sense that it remains cherished by those who actually take the time to read to better themselves.

When I read it for the first time… and I’ve read it many, many, times (and each time is the first time)… I always feel the same: I’ve been lost, and these words open my eyes instantly.

I knew I was misled, misplaced and confused, with a general “can’t put my finger on it – what’s wrong here” state of being in this world I find myself, and the words in this book sound like the soothing comforts of a trusted grandfather, calming my nerves, showing me a truth I was overlooking, and inspiring me to continue the beautiful struggle, and most importantly: to appreciate it.

🎨 Robert Henri’s Boot Camp

🗓 Dates: April 7 – 13, 2025

🌶 Deadline to apply: December 31, 2024

The Art Spirit Mentors:

Michael Hussar

Jeremy Mann

James McCrae

Nadezda

Martin Wittfooth

Each guest mentor on The Art Spirit programme will be overseeing their own boot camp, guiding participants through the book’s philosophy from different perspectives. The approach aims to allow a much deeper expansion of each participant’s mind, allowing every participating artist to come to their own conclusions and access the knowledge and practices shown to them to best support their individual pathways forward. “A multifaceted individual is a golden-handed genius of potential uniqueness.” Says Jeremy Mann. “Usually, you get one teacher who stunts and directs a path. Here, the beauty is that in the end, the attendees will be exposed to multiple viewpoints and in the aftermath, they will digest it how best fits their own life compass.”

Learn more about The Art Spirit 2025 event here

In keeping with the book itself, Jeremy will be focusing on “neither, and both [Henri’s] philosophy and practices, giving neither more importance than the other”. The aim will be to instill the concept of balance in all forms of experience within the formula for ‘successes’. “And of course, I will be sharing in no logical order… just like the book!” he shares with a mischievous grin.

While this may sound a little chaotic – because it is – it’s important to note that chaos isn’t the enemy of progress. Jeremy is confident that his approach will help the attendees best: “Maybe my favourite facet of the book is, as many who’ve recommended it have said, ‘you can open to just about any page, start reading anywhere’.”

Because it’s not about steps to an end. It’s about an open-ended lifestyle, about forming your life into a fully inspiring and creative experience. What results from living this way, is art.

The evolution of Quarantine Events

The Quarantine Events team are an ever-evolving hub, working with feedback and pushing boundaries to continue their goal in helping artists to truly flourish. As such, The Art Spirit 2025 event will include some new ideas and challenges for the next batch of brave artists signing up to experience Lazaretto Island. Similarly, mentors such as Jeremy Mann and Michael Hussar will continue to bring their own ever-evolving experiences to the table:

“As I grow, so do my teachings and experiences at workshops. Mostly because I learn more about what I could say or do to actually help artists, instead of a clearer idea of what I myself am doing. But the path and pathways, their interconnections, the deeper meaning, the bigger pictures to all I’ve been through as an artist which have guided my own experience of life: I’m learning how to translate into experiences that will help artists guide their own journey into more wondrous directions of their choosing.

“That will be the most important thing I wish to focus on at this edition of Quarantine. Helping the attendees awaken to their potential and giving them enough of a kick in the ass to develop their own confidence to choose their creative life, not let the world of others choose it for them.”

Still unsure?

In-line with past events, Quarantine Events are notoriously secretive, never unveiling the full timetable and keeping what happens on the island, on the island. One thing they can share is that whether you are a seasoned artist or a budding enthusiast, their workshops will provide invaluable insights and inspiration to propel your artistic practice to new heights.

Jumping into the unknown can be daunting, and for those of you who are still unsure, Jeremy has some parting thoughts to consider about what you can expect…

“In some of my dreams, I live in a quarantine world. It’s pure heaven to me there… The site itself is enough to wobble the knees. Creative sproutings from the grounds of a twisted history. No phones, no bullshit, no ego, a mental hospital for the art spirits, a cleansing retreat for world weary souls which can rekindle the fire of life in the hearts of those in need. It can’t solve your problems; it can however present you with the right ones to pursue.”

From Press Release //

It is with great pleasure to introduce Musonium Gallery and our inaugural group exhibition INITIATION: EXODUS, a triumphant introduction of the gallery’s program and much anticipated grand opening. Created and initially intended to open in late 2022 situated inside a former The Bank of Tampa branch building in Tampa, FL, Musonium Gallery has enthusiastically relocated to Palm Springs, CA for an inspiring new exhibition space in the Uptown Arts and Design District. This dramatic and distant departure from our initially intended Tampa flagship marks a pivotal shift in renewed energy and courage as Musonium embarks on this new journey. Quite literally, our own exodus. As the title suggests, INITIATION: EXODUS celebrates the inception of Musonium, the gallery’s ambitious endeavours ahead, the departure from one location to another, and the global induction of world-class talented contemporary artists who embody Musonium Gallery’s vision and mission.

The elegant, yet mysterious sculpture Cleo by Tim Roosen, features copper eyes with elaborate forged metal hair as well as welded elements creating an alluring metal maiden, where “a Gothic dream meets a Dieselpunk nightmare.” Darwin Leon’s The Rubenesque Paradox (inspired by Peter Paul Rubens’ The Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus) channels the old masters whilst bringing a unique contemporary flair to the forefront. Lorella Ragnatelli’s sultry figurative painting, titled Torment and Ecstasy, demonstrates academic precision observed through the treatment of the human body in an in-between state of tension and relaxation, whilst echoing the dynamic of two lovers who grow together but who can also grow apart if their passion is neglected. In Kevin Kuenster’s provocative piece titled, Seduction, two love interests are depicted sharing cherries on tranquil waters as the swaying of the wooden boat brings them closer together, whilst the clouds behind them manifest into pictorial representations of their lust. Ginger’s Don’t Grow Up, It’s A Trap explore the surreal, where feline and feminine energies align to create metaphorical depictions of women’s empowerment.

33PA: A new name, but still a major player in the Contemporary Art World https://beautifulbizarre.net/2024/07/15/33pa-contemporary-art-world/ Mon, 15 Jul 2024 13:35:44 +0000 https://beautifulbizarre.net/?p=172514 As the official Platinum Sponsor of this year’s 33PA Emerging Artist Award, I wanted to celebrate 33PA’s recent rebranding, so I got in touch with Didi and four of her artists to learn more.

33PA has been supporting contemporary creatives to grow their careers through extensive touchpoints, forming a worldwide, inclusive community where artists and art enthusiasts can connect. Previously known as PoetsArtists, 33PA is the multifaceted brainchild of Didi Menendez, covering both marketing and publishing of its artistic members. As the official Platinum Sponsor of this year’s 33PA Emerging Artist Award, I wanted to celebrate 33PA’s recent rebranding, so I got in touch with Didi and four of her artists to learn more.

From poetry to art

Beginning with just a published magazine, Didi Menendez soon expanded to form an international art community, publication, and subsequently bespoke curated exhibitions as well. Originally, Didi also published poems alongside the visual art: “When I created PoetsArtists in 2008 I [had also been] publishing MiPOesias since 1998, which was centered on just poetry. I thought that publishing a magazine which also included art would bring in more readers to the poems, but the opposite happened. The art took off and the poems started to become less and less. Eventually, it was just about the art.” With strong relationships now built with various talented artists, Didi saw it was time for a change. “I reached out to several galleries to see if they wanted to partner with me in selling the art – and Sergio Gomez with 33 Contemporary said yes.”

This evolution led to the recent rebranding, and now 33PA stands tall in the contemporary art world.

Fear not, however, if you thought more was changing! “The rebrand has not changed the way I work with artists” Didi assures, much to the delight of the hundreds of artists and creatives who form the 33PA community. Forming a broad spectrum, 33PA offers multiple levels at which to join. Each tier has been created to provide bespoke perks and focal points to boost activity and promotion.

33PA Artist Spotlight

Are you an artist seeking a new community to chat with like-minded creatives? Or looking to submit to bespoke monthly themes and shows, promoted on Artsy in partnership with 33 Contemporary? Perhaps you are you seeking a marketing representative with which to form a deeper working relationship? Whatever your goal, 33PA can help.

Below is more information, but we wanted to also shine a light on four members to celebrate some of the talent already within the 33PA’s community! Read ahead to learn more about Viktoria Savenkova, Kate Van Doren, J. Adam Mc Galliard, and Erica Calardo.

Viktoria Savenkova

A long-time member of 33PA since 2017, Belarusian-born Viktoria Savenkova’s works build an emotional and psychological dialogue with the spectator. Focussing on the concept of unfinished stories, she invites the viewer into her scenes to become immersed within Viktoria’s own inner world. In doing so, the spectator becomes, psychologically, a part of the art, more intricately and emotionally involved than perhaps first thought.

One of her best practices is to trust her “intuition fully in the creative process”, which has encouraged her to embrace spontaneity and explore unconventional ideas, leading to more authentic and personal artworks. She has been a part of multiple 33PA publications and exhibitions which has led to her engaging with a broader audience and furthering her sales.

My goal as an artist is to translate the essence of my inner world into art and express my feelings about the world. Through my artwork, I share my experiences and emotions, aiming to connect with others on a deeper level. I create pieces that resonate with people’s own feelings and experiences. Ultimately, I want my art to tell a story and inspire those who see it.

The creation of Untold Stories of my Garden and Untold Stories of my Garden 2 (featured) was deeply inspired by Viktoria’s memories of spending summers in her parent’s country house, where she would spend entire days painting amidst apple orchards and lush greenery. “These artworks encapsulate the essence of those nostalgic moments, where each brushstroke recalls the naturalness, tranquillity, and beauty of the surroundings. Through these pieces, capturing my feelings, I aim to share the serene and intimate narratives of my memories from the summer garden.”

Kate Van Doren

American artist Kate Van Doren’s overarching themes as a painter focus on human resiliency. She holds a particular spotlight supporting the voices of women and the LGBTQ community around the world, also seen through The Healing Words Project, a now-global workshop initiative which Kate founded in 2020 during the national strike ‘A Day Without Women’ in Mexico. “The project [has] women worldwide using the platform to share, connect, and heal.” Kate says.

The project is woven closely with her own emotive works. Many of her paintings are based on photography from The Healing Words Project, with participants interviewed as part of the artistic process. “My work [highlights women’s] struggles, triumphs, and the ongoing fight for justice and human rights. By incorporating elements such as cultural symbols and personal narratives, my paintings aim to uplift, emphasizing the power of shared stories and healing through artistic expression.” Her work, Oración Por Las Desaparecidas (Prayer for the Missing), was a Finalist in the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize in 2022 – a moment which “affirmed” her journey as an activist in art and highlighted a global commitment to raising awareness for causes crucial to the healing of women everywhere.

“My activism is generational; I grew up with justice-seeking parents who instilled in me the importance of human rights.” Kate shares proudly. As a psychotherapist and art therapist, she has worked with many women who have experienced trauma and violence.

Through art, I realized I could reach a global audience about violence against women and the healing power of shared stories of resilience.

She is ever grateful for 33PA’s support: “Having someone believe in and support my work is incredibly special. Through 33 Contemporary, Didi Menendez and Sergio have given me amazing opportunities, affirming my artistic voice. I am beyond grateful for their belief in my work.”

J. Adam McGalliard

J. Adam Mc Galliard always felt destined to be an artist, even before fully understanding what that meant. Masterfully blending traditional oil painting with modern technology, he explores themes of identity, myths, and the divides shaping today’s society. Drawing from a wide range of influences, including Old Master Painters like Rembrandt, Jan Van Eyck, and Bronzino alongside his love for dystopian storytelling, his muses have accumulated beautifully into his new series, Erewhon.

Blending dystopian visions with the reality of our environmental and societal crises, Erewhon is a series exploring the intertwining of human existence with a rapidly changing environment. It reflects themes of societal collapse and a redefinition of human-nature relationships amidst extreme polarization and never-ending climate change. Creating “unreal figures in unreal settings”, J. Adam’s works allow for a deep dive into the speculative and the surreal, offering a mirror to our present challenges and future possibilities.

“Collaborating with Sergio Gomez and Didi Menendez has been incredible; they bring extensive art world experience and a genuine understanding of the artist’s perspective, which is a rare and valuable combination,” he shares about 33PA.

Balancing his role as an Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of North Florida with his personal art career is admittedly challenging, yet deeply rewarding. “Teaching demands considerable time and energy but breaking down my process to make it teachable has allowed me to scrutinize my own methods more thoroughly, giving me a fresh perspective when I return to my own work.” He muses.

While his favourite pieces in Erewhon are “likely the ones [he hasn’t] painted yet”, Boudica (featured) shines brightly in his heart. Evoking a blend of futuristic and medieval aesthetics, the juxtaposition of natural and technological elements creates a surreal and thought-provoking atmosphere. Named after the legendary warrior queen who led an uprising against the Roman Empire, Boudica symbolizes resilience and defiance in the face of adversity: “this piece particularly resonates with me as it encapsulates the ongoing struggle against and harmony with nature that defines our era.”

Erica Calardo

Working in oils, watercolours and pencils, figurative painter Erica Calardo lives and works in the enchanting city of Bologna, Italy. Her mixed media works allow her to fully utilise each medium to its fullest, wrapping beauty and magic into an enhanced mirror of the world. “Art mediums are like instruments in music: any image, any emotion, calls for a specific voice” she shares. A self-proclaimed traveller and dreamer, Erica’s 17th century, church-like atelier is at the heart of her creative journeys. Here, she paints, “travelling along the dreams of others”, imbuing each painting with her own history as a self-taught artist, enhanced with further tutelage under Roberto Ferri and his treasured Old Masters’ workshops.

Her one “true love” however, falls back to oils, her primary medium. “They are rich in texture, allowing for both bold thick brushstrokes and fine details as well as gentle subtle glazes for a delicate effect. Oils offer a great variety of possibilities and different brushing techniques: experimenting and studying is a lifelong journey. The combination of different brush techniques within one painting is the key to creating striking images. This is especially true because oils allow for different methods: I don’t usually paint alla prima, but I rather go for an indirect layered style. I am constantly looking for the balance between lose bold strokes and delicate refined details. It takes time, but seeing the painting growing towards its final shape is such an intimate experience. It is a meditation, a deep dialogue and exchange between the painter and the painted image.”

Above all Erica enjoys painting female nudes: “achieving the perfect skin tones is a lifelong journey. The human body offers both a hard technical challenge, and the opportunity to express philosophical ideals in an allegoric way.” She explains. “And Didi and Sergio at 33PA provide the most supportive environment, from the professional perspective as well as the creative one. They’re always there for me and their enthusiasm towards the arts is amazing. They focus on the growth of their artists and are constantly providing opportunities to improve. They understand what an artist goes through.”

Delving into the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize after 6 years of competitions (2018-2023).

Written by Mauricio Gonzalez, Founder & CEO ARTDATAintel

Darwin said: “Every species has to fight harder and more often to retain its leadership position than it originally did to acquire it.” Animals must keep fighting harder to stay king of the jungle. Fish must swim faster to cross the seas first and birds must fly higher to own the skies. In a similar fashion so must Painters, Photographers, Sculptors, and Digital Artists.

Most Art Competitions accept only individual ‘species’ making it easier to select those with “the sharper beaks, the longer horns or the brightest feathers.” What makes the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize so special is that it strategically mixes all the ‘species’ into one to compete for leadership in a single arena to be the champion of the Beautiful Bizarre art world.

During its 6-year history, the competition has received thousands of submissions but only 725 awards have been given (counting Winners, Honourable Mentions and Finalists) to 515 artists. Here we celebrate the Top 16 most awarded artists. These are the ones who have demonstrated their sheer talent and will to retain their leadership positions by winning the most awards from 2018 to 2023.

Join the Grand Opening of Nanny Goat Gallery for a new style of art in the North Bay Area https://beautifulbizarre.net/2024/07/11/nanny-goat-gallery-ephemeral/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 13:55:36 +0000 https://beautifulbizarre.net/?p=171399 Nanny Goat Gallery celebrates its Grand Opening in Petaluma this Friday, July 12 with 70+ artists in their maiden exhibition, Ephemeral.

The post Join the Grand Opening of Nanny Goat Gallery for a new style of art in the North Bay Area appeared first on Beautiful Bizarre Magazine.

There are plenty of galleries around us in Petaluma, it’s quite an artist hub, but not one is doing what we are. In bringing these artists to a new area, they’ll hopefully be seen and appreciated by a whole new audience.

Nanny Goat Gallery

If you’re reading this, chances are that you appreciate art that exists outside of mainstream circles. If chances are serendipitous enough for you to be around the North Bay Area of California this Friday, you can also be a part of something special, as Nanny Goat Gallery prepares for its Grand Opening!

Taking roots in the Petaluma arts scene, Nanny Goat Gallery celebrates new and contemporary representational art, predominantly in the pop surreal, narrative, and fantasy genres. Their Grand Opening kicks off with over 70 artists from around the world bringing heart-lurchingly good artworks together under their maiden exhibition, Ephemeral. From original paintings to intricate sculptures, these enchanting artworks accrue to the perfect collection to be enjoyed within the gallery’s riverfront mid-19th century brick building – an original from Petaluma’s Gold Rush era.

Its founders Emily and Paul Eccles have come a long way since starting Nanny Goat Gallery online in 2022. Having overcome multiple challenges including personal health issues, securing their dream building and then dealing with renovation delays, the couple are more than ready to celebrate their big opening. “While running the online gallery I had completely fallen in love with the community and the artists I was working with.” Shares Emily. “I wanted to do something to make them proud, as well as make us proud.”

Their hard work has not gone to waste. Far from the minimalist white walls experience, Nanny Goat Gallery happily leans into its historical foundations. The gallery boasts a two-room space with rustic brick walls, across the street from the river in downtown Petaluma. “It’s a beautiful space!” Emily smiles. “I plan on us being a little non-traditional. Our space will be cozy and inviting. We’ve brought in some antique furniture and traditional pedestals to complement the antiquity of the space. I want people to feel really welcome and I want us to fit the old Victorian style of the neighborhood we’re in. Stark white rooms just wouldn’t do. I’m a maximalist and that will show in the gallery as well.”

Natasha-Zraikat-Tempest
Natasha Zraikat: “Tempest”

We have put all of our heart into this passion project and are humbled by all of the hard work put in by the artists. If it weren’t for their enthusiasm and dedication to the gallery, none of this would be possible, of course.

Supporting the bond between artists and collectors

The opening of Nanny Goat Gallery is a celebration of Emily and Paul Eccles’ love for the arts, allowing them to further their support of local and international creatives within the fantasy, surrealist and other less mainstream genres. Paul, a Shakespearean actor for over 15 years, loves collecting art as much as Emily, whose studies in literature and art history make it no surprise that they ended up in the beautiful cultural arts hub of Petaluma.

Both collectors themselves, the founders understand the positive power that art can have. For Emily, however, this connection runs even deeper: “I had always wanted to collect art. Over a five-year period, I had five invasive surgeries due to stage 4 endometriosis and really struggled. Walking through the hospitals, I remember how happy the art made by local artists would make me. I was grateful they had donated their work to the hospitals and realized it was a way to bring joy into my life when not much did. I started looking into collecting art at home soon after. Paul had a Jeremy Miranda commissioned for my 40th birthday and it continued from there.

“I started following more artists and galleries on social media platforms and have enjoyed getting to know both gallerists and artists alike. Honestly, I had always been intimidated by the idea of collecting but found the art world quite void of pretense. I found out that collecting art was fun and brought me so much joy!”

An accessible gallery

At the heart of it all, Nanny Goat Gallery exists to bring underrepresented styles of art into the limelight of the North Bay Area. To ensure accessibility, Paul and Emily aim to introduce collectors to beautiful works at a range of prices. “Having something for everyone is important to me. I want to show art that people can really connect with.” explains Emily. “I love a good landscape or still life, but Paul and I connect more with the art that tells a story and is open to interpretation.”

It’s also important to me to show emerging artists, something collectors haven’t seen before. All of the solos we have lined up through next June feature artists newer to galleries. In some cases, we’re the first time an artist has worked with a gallery. I love that!

The Grand Opening

For those expecting a fun party – you won’t be disappointed! Situated in the heart of wine country, there will be wine and beer, complimented by the beer garden next door with live music to get you in the groove. Get there early to enjoy Nanny Goat Gallery’s small ribbon cutting before being welcomed inside at 5pm to look at over 70 beautiful works of art.

“Downtown Petaluma really comes to life on Friday nights.” Emily exclaims, excitedly. “A warm night by the river in wine country. What else is there?”

From Copro Gallery press release //

Hellboy is a fictional superhero created by writer-artist Mike Mignola. The character first appeared in San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2 (August 1993), and has since appeared in various eponymous miniseries, one-shots and intercompany crossovers.

The character has been adapted into three live-action feature films: two starring Ron Perlman in 2004 and 2008 in the title role, and one in 2019 as well as two animated films, plus three video games – Asylum Seeker, The Science of Evil, and as a playable character in Injustice 2.

A well-meaning half-Demon (or Cambion) whose true name is Anung Un Rama (“and upon his brow is set a crown of flame”), Hellboy was summoned from Hell to Earth as a baby by Nazi occultists (spawning his hatred for the Third Reich). He was discovered on a fictional Outer Hebrides Island by the Allied Forces; amongst them, Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, who formed the United States Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.). In time, Hellboy grew to be a large, red-skinned adult with a tail, horns (which he files off, leaving behind circular stumps on his forehead), cloven hooves for feet, and an oversized right hand made of stone (the “Right Hand of Doom”).

About Mike Mignola (from Superfan Promotions LLC) //

Mike Mignola’s fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age; reading Dracula at age twelve introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore, from which he has never recovered. Starting in 1982 as a bad inker for Marvel Comics, he swiftly evolved into a not-so-bad artist. By the late 1980s, he had begun to develop his own unique graphic style, with mainstream projects like Cosmic Odyssey and Batman:Gotham by Gaslight.

In 1994, he published the first Hellboy series through Dark Horse. There are thirteen Hellboy graphic novels (with more on the way), several spin-off titles (B.P.R.D., Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien, and Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder), prose books, animated films, and two live-action films starring Ron Perlman. Along the way he worked on Francis Ford Coppola’s film Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), was a production designer for Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), and was the visual consultant to director Guillermo del Toro on Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004), and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). Mike’s books have earned numerous awards and are published in a great many countries. Mike lives in Southern California with his wife, daughter, and cat.

The post New works by Juliet Schreckinger celebrate nautical myths at Nahcotta Gallery appeared first on Beautiful Bizarre Magazine.

]]>
Though the United States of America is a recently born country in the ever-extensive timeline of human civilisation, its inhabitants have already formed their own myths and legends which have been passed down through the last few generations. This behaviour is beautifully human; what better way to pass on knowledge, to titillate one’s imagination and document different cultures, than through storytelling? Stories have always been close to Juliet Schreckinger’s heart, and she found herself falling in love with the nautical legends and myths about the east coast of America.

“Growing up on Long Island, I always felt so inspired by the ocean and loved hearing old tales and folklore about the sea. From shipwrecks to stories about haunted lighthouses, I am and forever will be curious when it comes to nautical myths.” She shares. This interest has been so powerful, that Juliet has centred her entire upcoming show at Nahcotta Gallery around this theme.

Nautical myths and legends

Opening at Nahcotta Gallery this July 2024, this new series of stippled works celebrate the heart of nautical east America with Juliet’s signature collection of animal characters. The event will unveil whole new pieces, concluding almost eight months of work.

“As soon as I figured out my theme, I immediately began drafting the stories about the characters and places that I wanted to feature in the show. These stories, which served as the guiding narrative reference for many pieces in the show, were largely inspired by the countless hours I’ve spent over the last several years taking reference photos throughout coastal New England.”

I have been working so hard in the studio on this series (some of the larger pieces in the show took more than 80 hours to complete), and I can’t wait for the magical moment of seeing it all come together in Nahcotta’s beautiful space!

Juliet Schreckinger

Alongside this, Juliet Schreckinger will also be unveiling bespoke tales of her own – one for each artwork in the show. These tales mirror modern-day myths, celebrating the history and influences of the east coast of America. Juliet has relished the experience: “This series allowed me to draw some of my favourite places that I shot reference of, while letting my mind wander into the “what if” territory that comes along with surrealism. While these myths I wrote are not real, many are based on kernels of true legends that I read about during my research for this show. I am very grateful to my wonderful gallerists for allowing me to have artistic freedom when coming up with the theme for this show, as it is always so amazing to let my innermost narratives come out without restriction.”

Nahcotta Gallery

Nahcotta Gallery is located in the beautiful city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, which is the “quintessential nautical New England town”, surrounded by many lighthouses and ocean views. Not only is Juliet looking forward to partnering once again with Nahcotta Gallery; she hopes that this series will connect with the locals who cherish these nautical landmarks and the local wildlife around them, both of which served as her biggest inspirations for this show.

In turn, Nahcotta Gallery are just as excited to be hosting Juliet:

Nahcotta’s collaboration with Juliet began with our Enormous Tiny Art shows, and her latest nautical collection beautifully showcases her evolving talent and unwavering dedication. By continuously pushing the boundaries of her creative expression, Juliet’s work has become highly anticipated in our gallery.

It has been a true joy to witness her remarkable growth as an artist over the past few years, and we are deeply honoured to present her new solo show to our community in July.

A sacred space for growth

Juliet’s excitement for her upcoming solo is infectious. If you have read any of my other articles about Juliet, you will know that stippling is an artistic practice for the ultra-patient; she laughs with delight as things finally wrap up in the wake of her show. “This series has been both rewarding and fulfilling,” she stresses, only mildly fazed by the hundreds of hours that she has put into creating the show.

“It’s rewarding to see the light at the end of the tunnel after many tedious days spent drawing for hours come to a close. It is fulfilling in that I wrote many of the narratives before ever sketching out the images, so to see the characters from my stories come to life feels so special. It is a truly wonderful moment when I finally get to look into the face of a character who before only lived in my mind (and my heart, as I do genuinely love each and every one of the characters I draw).”

My studio time with these pieces has been a sacred space, a time that I was able to witness the emotions that my characters face in each narrative – love, adoration, fear, courage – and attempt to hold onto these emotions while drawing each character.

I feel grateful every day that I am alive and get to live this dream.

Whether you hold an interest in comic books or not, I guarantee that you will recognise Jack Kirby’s artistic influence. Widely recognized as one of the most influential creators in comic book history, Jack’s prolific journey across the decades has heavily influenced how comics books have evolved. Some of the most well-known characters that he created, or co-created, include Captain America, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, the X-Men, the Hulk, Darkseid and the New Gods. Yet this is only the tip of his creative iceberg. The “scope of Kirby’s contributions to pop culture at large” is an incredible feat – one which Corey Helford Gallery, partnering with Jack Kirby Museum & Research Center, are celebrating on June 29th.

To celebrate, Corey Helford Gallery will be hosting a large group exhibition featuring over 70 artists alongside original works by Jack Kirby himself. Each artist has created a bespoke new work inspired by Jack Kirby, celebrating the worlds and characters he has created, and the influence this has had on them. Meticulously curated, the artists exhibiting are some of the best in the New Contemporary art scene. The array of well-known visuals, reinterpreted in multiple styles, promises to be a fascinating journey as you walk around Corey Helford Gallery; this isn’t to be missed!

From press release:

Throughout his half-century career, Kirby stretched the boundaries of comic art and storytelling with his innovative style. His storytelling is characterized by wild physicality that draws the reader’s eye from panel to panel, breathing life into static images in a way that few comic artists ever have.

His use of multi-layered “deep space” was integral to this as well as extreme anatomical foreshortening. Stylistic hallmarks such as his trademark “Kirby Krackle” have become the industry shorthand for strange, indescribable cosmic energies. Kirby’s squiggles, whether indicating metallic shine, futuristic and alien machinery/circuitry, or dynamic musculature, are enshrined in the comic book visual storytelling vocabulary.

His later intricate costume designs also invoke a cosmic comic book quintessence: Kirby headgear is a genre unto itself. Kirby machines are unlike any others, whether weapons, portals, or vehicles, they all draw in the eye and electrocute the viewing mind with their sublime technology.

Kirby’s artworks are as powerful today as the day they were created, and his influence lives on, as seen in the remarkable new works created for this very special exhibition.

Mariko-A-Little-Thunder
A Little Thunder by Mariko

“While I was raised to appreciate Modern Art, it’s always been my dream, as a comic collector, to have a show with Jack Kirby. And now I have one and I hope it inspires everyone else the way it inspired me. His work is thrilling, dynamic, fun and if it doesn’t make you want to burst into flames, or stretch your arm around the block or surf the stars, then I don’t know what will.”

Bruce Helford, Co-founder of Corey Helford Gallery

About Jack Kirby:

Jack Kirby (1917-1994) was more than just a comic book artist: he was a storyteller, an innovator, and a visionary. His early work with Joe Simon on Captain America in the early 1940s saw characters breaking panel borders and narrative conventions as they fought across the pages. As superheroes fell out of favour for a period after World War II, he and Simon helped revitalize the industry with work on crime, war, sci-fi, and monster comics, while inventing the romance comic genre. By the time Kirby was doing what became his most famous and enduring work at Marvel in the 1960s, he was a seasoned veteran, yet only just coming into the full power of his creativity.

From the earliest Fantastic Four and Thor stories, Kirby crafted an entire industry that now fuels billion-dollar blockbuster movies and prestige TV shows. Kirby’s prolific but strained working relationship/partnership with Stan Lee couldn’t fully satisfy his overabundance of storytelling ideas, and he left Marvel in 1970 for chief competitor DC Comics, where he served as writer, artist, and editor on his own line of books, creating an entirely new cosmology that remains a cornerstone of that company’s storytelling, over 50 years after he left the very titles he founded.

Biblical in tone and mythical in scope, Kirby’s 1970s output remains some of the most startlingly ambitious work ever put on display in mainstream superhero comics. His ideas and storytelling techniques continue to inform virtually everyone who puts pencil to paper in the industry.

Kirby’s stories look for the best, most universal qualities of the human experience, even as the characters themselves reach beyond the cosmos. If there were a Mt. Rushmore of 20th century pop culture storytelling, Kirby should be etched alongside fellow visionaries like George Lucas, Gene Roddenberry, and Steven Spielberg.
