Hirabayashi Takahiro paints surreal worlds inhabited by young women and girls. He expresses the ambiguous boundary between reality and unreality through the female figure, who is neither a child nor an adult, but something in-between.

Hirabayashi-Takahiro-Fantasy

The adolescent female figures are between childhood and womanhood, in a state of transition, straddling two states like the universe straddles the physical and the metaphysical.” Luke W Barrett

The inspiration for this theme came during his last year as a student, when a major earthquake (2011) transformed his daily life into an extraordinary one. He was moved by the piety and kindness of human beings when he saw food and beautiful flowers being offered to a stone statue of a god on the side of the road, as if supplies were unsatisfactory. “I hope to express the feelings I had at that time through my artwork as well”. Hirabayashi then went on to explore Japanese religious stories and rituals, and painted a worldview inspired by a casual scene with religious stone statues standing in the streets of villages.

More recently Hirabayashi’s work focuses on the theme of the nostalgia, which he feels for a specific place. Through this theme, he believes that human beings are composed of matter that holds memories since the birth of the universe, and through the emotion of “nostalgia,” we are always connected to this world (universe) and contain the world itself.

We are all part of the ever-changing flow of the world. I want to depict a world that allows us to glimpse the essence of a world that transcends human knowledge and time, stirring the imagination of those who view it.

Hirabayashi-Takahiro-waterlily

Hirabayashi Takahiro paints on religious and folklore subjects from his hometown in Japan, especially Nagano. The local gods and spirits, customs and beliefs that have their origins in prehistoric times. He wants to present an unconventional view of the subject by depicting a mysterious and surreal world with fairy tale-like images.

Hirabayashi depicts the cycle of life. The theme of his work is the process from the origin of life and this world, to its destruction and rebirth. By depicting this theme, “I would like to express that people and everything that exists in this universe are connected and one”.

Farnoosh Doroudgar is a member of the Beautiful Bizarre Artist Directory

Farnoosh Doroudgar is an Iranian Artist and Model, born and raised in Tehran, Iran known for the project The Atlas of Beauty since 2017. She has been interested in painting since childhood and pursuing painting seriously since she was 24 years old. Digital painting was a revolutionary road in her career and it enabled her to portray everything she had in mind in a new way.

Farnoosh-Doroudgar-profile

Farnoush thinks that Digital Art per se is capable of expressing art on a deeper level and provides so many opportunities to demonstrate one’s own imagination which is rare in any other forms and mediums in art, so that she can influence the surrounding people with it.

Farnoosh-Doroudgar-mary-magdalene

As a middle eastern woman and Artist dealing with many difficulties such as international sanctions toward us, the most concern living in Iran for me in recent years was to be an advocate of her people, and she have always sought this issue to demonstrate their inner feelings and emotions throughout my work.

Farnoosh-Doroudgar-makeup-yourself

Farnoosh Doroudgar’s works mainly demonstrates womens issues and her concerns in the form of a hero’s journey. She always gets inspired by the greatest artists from the renaissance era such as Botticeli, Da Vinci and Persian’s such as Ali akbar Sadeghi. Her obsession with details and flourish settings comes from both western and eastern art. Her mission and aim as an artist is to portray the beauty and difficulties of a woman’s life specially Persian women who’ve been struggling during their lifetime.

Severine Pineaux started painting in her teens. After working as an illustrator for role-playing games and SF, horror and fantasy book covers, she resumed a personal creative adventure in 1996 after the birth of her first child, and published these works in books in which the images precede the text and narrative and are the inspiration behind them. Her work navigates between two worlds, that of painting and that of comics and illustrated books. At present, she’s also continuing to work for the game worlds, illustrating for Sorcery TCG. She lives in the Brocéliande forest, which is a great source of inspiration. She is quoted on i-cac.fr .

Severine-Pineaux-Profile

Severine’s paintings are a walk in a dream world, inspired by mythology and fairy tales but also by cyberpunk culture and dark romanticism where past and future intertwine. Staged in her books, they become actors and scenery of a paper theater. By merging trees and humans, plants and animals, by mixing machines and plants, she evokes the links and the unity of the world suggested by ancient spiritualities as well as by contemporary science.

Severine-Pineaux-The-mirror

The starting point of her painting is fusion. Severine perceive the contemporary world as a universe of crossbreeding where human cultures are rapidly mixing, where hybridization with machines becomes possible, where we discover that our DNA is very close to that of other living beings, where quantum entanglement abolishes distances… It is this feeling of disappearance of the borders between things that she translates into images. “I am located in the twilight zone, between the shadow and the light, I feel the strength of the feelings of love which can link the beings”. She wants to believe in the possible reconciliation between mankind and nature, but a grimacing skull is sometimes seen in the middle of flowers.

Severine-Pineaux-Leaves-dragon

Severine Pineaux chose the classical medium of oil painting, and the figurative way to give the maximum evocative power to her mental images and also for the pure pleasure that the act of painting gives her. She tries to create with her adult technique in the state of mind of her childhood. It is very important to her to publish her paintings in creative books halfway between art book, illustrated book and comic book, it is the way she found to spread her work and tell all the stories that inhabits her mind.

Severine Pineaux depicts plant-beings, made up of accumulated leaves, bark and flowers, as Arcimboldo might have done.  These dryads and fantastical animals often roam landscapes of ruined cities, reflecting ecological concerns. She uses symbolism, drawing on European Renaissance painting as much as pop culture and Celtic legends.

Nick Pedersen’s work combines his own photography, digital collage, and printmaking techniques to create elaborate, photorealistic images focusing on environmental issues. A main theme in his work is “beautiful decay,” creating large-scale pieces that reveal a satirically, post-apocalyptic vision of the not-too-distant future.

Nick-Pedersen-Profile

Nick’s artwork has been shown in galleries across the country and internationally, including the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, Paradigm Gallery, Antler Gallery, and UMOCA. He has published two artist books featuring his long-term personal projects Sumeru and Ultima, and many of his images have been recognized with awards from the International Photography Awards, the Fine Art Photography Awards, the Adobe Design Achievement Awards, and the Photoshop Guru Award.

Nick-Pedersen-King

As an educator he teaches workshops on photomontage and digital collage, and has lectured at Pratt Institute, NYU Polytechnic Institute, and the University of Utah. Nick has also completed artist residencies at the Banff Center in Canada, the Gullkistan Creative Residency in Iceland, the Taft-Nicholson Center in Montana, and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art to work on his environmental projects.

Nick Pedersen’s work explores environmental issues of the Anthropocene, an age of human impact on the natural world. From climate change and more extreme weather events to loss of habitat, biodiversity, and species extinctions, our planet is quickly approaching a strange and unpredictable future.

Nick-Pedersen-Changes

Through his work, Nick has created a series of artistic explorations into the scientific concept of the ‘environmental uncanny’. This is a term referring to the collective denial of humanity going about business as usual in the face of these slow-moving processes and unalterable changes to the world. In response, his artwork plays off of older forms of beauty in art making, referencing sublime landscape paintings, animal studies and still life’s, fanciful wallpaper, and textiles. His images appropriate these picturesque styles and idealized nature imagery to create elaborate juxtapositions with subversive elements from modern civilization.

Nick’s projects focus on concepts like the reclamation of nature and rewilding the modern world, creating a contemplative series of narrative imagery and art installations that question the legacy modern humanity will be handing down to future generations. He portrays this as an epic struggle and in his work these forces clash in theatrical, post-apocalyptic battlegrounds.

Mishelle Sherri is a member of the Beautiful Bizarre Artist Directory

Mishelle Sherri is a multimedia artist and illustrator who tells dark and bizarre stories using the delicate craft of paper sculpture. Their style can be compared to a colourful tapestry woven with threads of influence from M.C. Escher, Akiya Kageichi, Ernst Fuchs, and other artists they admire. A couple of scalpels and a stack of construction paper – that is practically all Mishelle needs to create a sculpture.

Mishelle-Sherri-Profile
Mishelle-Sherri-Amidst

Every part of the sculpture is meticulously cut by hand. To make cutouts more rigid and prevent potential damage, Mishelle soaks them in PVA glue until they have stiffened and then bends them at different angles to create an illusion of volume. They often draw and paint over the cutouts using watercolour, micron pens, and coloured pencils. Apart from construction paper, Mishelle occasionally uses cellulose film, as it creates a mesmerising play of colours when light passes through it.

In essence, Mishelle’s works are visual riddles that require patience and an eye for detail; every stroke, shape, and colour conceals layers of meaning, inviting viewers to engage in a playful dance of interpretation. As an artist, Mishelle speaks in a language of allusions, cultural references, and symbols, often derived from their dream sequences and archetypal imagery. Their art is an intricate game where your interpretation is as valid as the initial idea, as they consider every viewer to be their co-author.

Mishelle-Sherri-Amidst-the-war

Literature lies at the heart of Mishelle’s creative universe. Most of their drawings and sculptures are based on books that shaped them into the person they are today, such as The Glass Bead Game by Hermann Hesse and Hopscotch by Julio Cortázar.

Yet Mishelle’s work is more than merely creating a visual accompaniment to literary compositions; their aim is to reimagine these narratives, offering fresh perspectives and breathing new life into timeless tales.

Mishelle-Sherri

Mishelle Sherri views their art not only as a way to explore the human condition and express their civic position in a creative manner but also as a cathartic outlet, a tool to externalize their Weltschmerz. They often use their works as a window into their restless mind.

An artist of multiple disciplines living in Scotland, Noar Lee Naggan has worked in animation, graphic design, web design, and illustration. Chiefly interested in telling stories through his art, Noar aspires to one day write his own books and illustrate them.

Nowadays Noar has also started moving towards the world of fine art painting/drawing.

Grimm fairytales, Jewish folklore and mysticism, tarot cards magic, scary old nursery rhymes, all are themes that pop up in Noar’s work, time and again.

Noar Lee Naggan was born in Israel and discovered Jan Van Eyck’s work there, and then, moving to America, he fell in love with the magical realism of Grant Wood. These two had the strongest influence on his work.

Inspired by nature and motivated by music, Noar tends to be drawn to fine details and rustic textures, and quite obsessed with digging up images from the underground labyrinth of his childhood fears/dreams.

Karen Turner is a member of the Beautiful Bizarre Artist Directory

Karen Turner is an award-winning artist whose paintings are a commentary on the weight of expectations.  Born in London in 1978, Karen attended Hampstead Fine Arts College before going on to a career in the city.  Since returning to art in 2020, she has been awarded the President’s Prize by the Institute of East Anglian Artists, the Professional Artist Award by the Visual Artists Association and the Art Fluent Evolution Grant.

Karen-Turner-Studio-Summer-2022

She was a finalist in the Theo Paphitis Art Prize, the Holly Bush Emerging Woman Painter Prize and the Women United Art Prize, as well as being shortlisted for the New Emergence Art Prize.

In 2022 Karen was invited by fashion and fine art photographers Inez and Vinoodh to join Double Dutch.  An online charity gifting platform, her work features alongside the likes of Cindy Sherman, Gary Hume, Es Devlin and Lady Gaga.

Focusing on the physical body and the scrutiny to which it is commonly subjected, Karen Turner’s paintings explore what society expects of a woman, the ways in which a woman’s shape is often considered to define her, and the impact that this has on her life and sense of self.

An examination of the inherent bias against, and at times discrimination of, fat bodies, her work challenges the traditionally narrow view of who can be considered beautiful, as she sensitively presents her subjects in a way that both celebrates and normalizes.

Karen’s first solo show was held in London with Red Eight Gallery in January 2024, and in October 2023 she shared a two-person exhibition with Rosie Phillips at Fairhurst Gallery in Norwich.

Karen is currently a judge for the Visual Art Open 2024, and one of ten finalists in the Dubel Emerging Artist of the Year Prize.

Carolin Leary Prinn (b. Boston, 1984) has been inspired by myth, folklore and history from a very young age, stirring the creation of her mythical world, The Islands of Niljora, a world that frames all of her creations. With a love of symbolism she forms her imagery and stories – evoking a realm of a dreamy, mystical and otherworldly nature. Her work traverses the world of fantastical illustration and realism, inspired by The Golden Age of illustrators, animation, Ancient art, and masters of The Renaissance and 19th century.

Carolin has been devoted to her art and the recipient of multiple scholarship awards, amongst other accolades, since childhood. Following an influential painting residency through her university, she began her career as an illustrator and portrait artist in her ancestral home of New Zealand, and found quick success. She has been a selected finalist for The International A.R.C. Salon, The Adam Portraiture Award and selected to tour nationally through The New Zealand Portrait Gallery. As an author and illustrator, she has published two books on her world, held in the permanent and heritage collections of The New Zealand National Library and Otago University’s Hocken Library.

Her works can be found in private collections in Europe, The United States and New Zealand.

Carolin Leary Prinn sees her works as artefacts of her world, The Islands of Niljora. It has been the way she has organised the world we live in since she was a child, expressed in her paintings, drawings, written stories, even the creation of its costumes. Part myth, fairytale, and spiritual journey, The Islands of Niljora is a symbolic reflection on our universal human story – our history, human nature, philosophies, and personal experiences. Her work connects to a lifelong fascination with nature, our greatest teacher, as well as to the mystical, the mythological and the ancient world.

Hilary Martin of Alchemy of the Pen is a New Jersey native and a self-taught artist who has taken this concept and flipped it on its head. Her work is known for combining imagery that often contradicts, yet melds effortlessly, in a way that encourages pause and to search for a deeper understanding. With a background in air traffic control, she diverted from logic and dove head-first into her art career in 2020 after finding solace in the absurd and the beauty that underpins much darkness, she found herself surrounded by.

“Alchemy, defined as the process of taking something ordinary and turning it into something extraordinary, sometimes in a way that cannot be explained”.

Hilary-Martin-Profile

After a decade-long hiatus from the art world, she picked up a pen once more while living abroad as a means of therapy to counter mental health issues and subsequently rekindled a lost passion. From watercolor and pen illustrations to oil paintings, Hilary aims to highlight the ever-present beauty that is a constant even in the darkest times.

Hilary-Martin-Colony

She takes pride in finding herself a member of a modern-day Art Brut movement that allows her work to remain accessible to all. She frequently exhibits at music festivals, including the Firefly Music Festival (2021, 2022), Darkside of the Con 2021, and Dark Force Fest (2022, 2023, 2024). Additionally, as a freelance artist and printmaker, she is a regular feature within the oddities community and at national conventions within the United States, sharing both original art and fine art bamboo prints. As an independent artist, Martin effortlessly weaves between showing art in group shows such as The Hive Gallery: “Cute and Creepy” Los Angeles, 2023, and Brandywine Festival of Arts (2021, 2022) while continuing to build her craft and learning from other artists by partaking in intensives, including “Visionary Painting intensive 2023” hosted by Alex and Allyson Grey at the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors.

Music and sound are integral of Hilary Martin’s work and are as important as the chosen paint or brush. A synesthetic expression is at the crux of her creations and forms the backbone of her illustrations, from which they are then elaborated, embellished, and built upon. Timbre, pitch, harmonic tone, and sound frequencies are perceived as line, shape, and color, leading to the creation of the Macinate tour merchandise artwork, “11:11,” for musician IAMX and found published in the IAMX “Headstreams: Art and Poetry Book.”

Hilary-Martin-Francis

“Dark, yet colorful” is a recurring phrase that is often used when describing her work. She is adamant that darker themes depicting decomposition, disconnection, anxiety, horror, and gore do not necessarily have to be blatant in their delivery. Those themes are inherent within us all and will naturally come out with a piece just as they come into play within our lives. Mushrooms juxtaposed against blooming flora; rosy flesh stands firmly next to bare bones, and color storms in to counterbalance the blackness. There is a quiet beauty in the concept of Wabi Sabi and an undeniable allure to the perfectly imperfect that stands at the forefront of her works.

Cédric Brion known as Studio Clavicule Pics was born in 1978 in Belgium, in the suburbs of Mons. He has always been interested in the plastic arts, and started to develop his taste for photography at the age of 18. His first tool was a silver camera, which he developed in the darkest part of his room. After several years of research and experience, Studio Clavicule Pics was able to approach the world of professional photography, thanks to various competitions and work done for the business world.

Studio-Clavicule-Pics-Profile

Studio Clavicule Pics’ fascination with creating portraits in a dark, even noir atmosphere comes from his early childhood. He has always been fascinated by fantastic and dark worlds, and creates portraits that transport the viewer into another universe. He likes to see his portraits as windows to the imaginary worlds.

From the darkness of the soul, a clarity can emerge that overwhelms him. Light that is too bright often dazzles, darkness magnifies it. Cédric likes to capture contrasts in his portraits, and ancient civilizations have always been one of his sources of inspiration.  He wants his portraits to appeal to people, so that they can see themselves in them and recognize themselves.

Studio Clavicule Pics’ favorite subject is the dark side of man and his ideology of believing in divine beings since the dawn of time.

Katie O’Sullivan is a contemporary figurative painter and ceramic sculptor.  She received her BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York City.  She Currently lives and works as a professional artist in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Katie-O-Sullivan-Profile

Katie has always been drawn to the artistry of the human form.  Portrayed in many different styles and mediums, it has been the central part of her paintings and sculptures throughout her career. Her work focuses on narrative and storytelling, with each new body of work giving her the opportunity to explore new ways to reimagine the human figure.

Resurrection is the title of Katie’s current body of work.  The resurrection of the divine feminine, the goddess, the witch, the wise one that lives in all of us.  The resurrection of our voice, our truth, our freedom, our soul.  Those aspects of our selves that have been silenced, trivialized, denied, buried.

Her sculptures in this series were the first to be created.  Majestic and proud, they stand strong in their uniqueness and feminine power.  Some are adorned with symbols of ancient magic, others bathed in lusty patinas.

Katie O’Sullivan ‘s paintings are the newest exploration in her resurrection series.  Rising out of sacred waters, the feminine soul is awakening from her deep sleep, reconnecting with nature and her ancient wisdom.  Created with oil paints and 24kt gold leaf they are starting out on their quest to discover their true divine nature.

Recently gaining media coverage featuring two of her paintings in Art Edit Magazine, sold extensively across Australia & New Zealand.

Kym-Lee-Profile

Driven by a profound love for animals and a belief in kindness and empathy towards all living beings, Kym’s art takes various forms, such as painting, sculpture, illustration, and digital art. Drawing inspiration from personal and collective memories, and the beauty around us.

Art allows me to connect with my creativity, growing up I always had a passion for art, immersing herself into an Airbrush business winning many awards and later following my dreams of exploring the world and creating narratives that deal with concepts of intelligence, connections, and fragility through painting and sculpture.

“A moment unfolds, inviting contemplation and wonder amidst a tapestry of diversity. It reminds us that intelligence and connections are inherent in all living things. As the park resonates with the sound of heartbeats, it beckons us to embrace and explore our differences, revealing the essence of uniqueness and beauty.”

‘Whispers of the Park’ is a captivating exploration of both the tangible and metaphysical aspects of existence within a park’s nocturnal atmosphere. Through her body of work the four paintings weave together narratives that encompass contemplation, interconnectedness, fragility, and the pursuit of knowledge.

Kym Lee’s vision transcends the canvas to embrace profound philosophical themes, resonating with the beauty that surrounds us while inviting viewers to delve into the depths of the human experience.
