2024 Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize
Musonium Grand Prize Award Winner

2-Andrea-Kowch

Andrea Kowch

Born and Currently resides: USA

“In the Distance”, Acrylic on canvas, 36″ x 36″

American artist Andrea Kowch combines realistic narrative and naturalistic technique, subtly fused with surreal, dreamlike undercurrents in the quest to investigate and represent the human condition. Born in Detroit, Michigan, she attended the College for Creative Studies, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a BFA. Her paintings are rich in mood, allegory, and precision of medium, reflecting a wealth of influences from Northern Renaissance and American art to the rural landscapes and vernacular architecture of her native Michigan.

Kowch’s highly acclaimed paintings garner Best of Show awards globally. Major exhibitions at museums and galleries include the Bo Bartlett Center, Museum of Art-Deland, where her recent solo retrospective, Mysterious Realms was presented in 2023, London and Rome’s Dorothy Circus Gallery, Muskegon Museum of Art, where her first solo retrospective Dream Fields debuted in 2013, Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Jacksonville, Grand Rapids Art Museum, ArtPrize, Art Basel Miami, the Los Angeles Art Show, ArtHamptons, and SCOPE NYC. She also frequently headlines leading national and international art publications. Kowch’s works occupy public and museum collections, such as the R.W. Norton Art Gallery Museum, of the R.W. Norton Art Foundation, Muskegon Museum of Art, Grand Rapids Art Museum, and significant private collections worldwide. Kowch works and resides in Michigan, and is represented exclusively by RJD Gallery.

“In the Distance”: Love is a flaming catalyst that alters reality in a flash. My mind opens and tunes into a new frequency. Is the storm upon the horizon approaching or departing? What, or Who, might this storm be? What transference does it carry? Will it strike down or dissipate as swiftly as it arrives? My duality awakens. The real and unreal are one. I am reminded that yin and yang energy is ever-present in all things. The male presence reveals how my paintings evolve with me, imparting experiences and lessons learned. The woman baking rouses from a reverie, alerted to distant thunder and a sudden electric charge that cuts the air. Two men feverishly harvest wheat, the source of her bread. The horizon implies an unknown destiny.

This work is a testament to the divine power of two halves creating a whole.

2024 Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize: Yasha Young Projects Sculpture Award Winners Announced!

There is nothing more rewarding than to support young and emerging talent or boost careers. That is what we do here at the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize and with my Yasha Young Sculpture Award. By supporting the process I can give the select artist the freedom to experiment and truly support the creative process, which has been a passion of mine. Buying art is important but supporting the artists to be able to create is, in my opinion, just as vital.

-Yasha Young, Founder of Yasha Young Projects

Congratulations to the 2024 Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize Yasha Young Projects Sculpture Award Winners: Spencer Hansen, Ornélie & César Orrico!

Spencer-Hansen

3rd Prize Winner

Spencer Hansen

Currently resides: United States

“Lela”, Ceramic, Himalayan goat fur, Brass, 80 x 34 x 24 in.

Spencer Hansen graduated from San Francisco Art Institute in 2006. He is an interdisciplinary artist whose imagination and intellect intertwine to create playful art thoughtfully sourced, designed and constructed. Spencer works primarily with natural materials, hand making detailed art that is the antithesis of our disposable culture. Endlessly experimenting with processes and fueled by curiosity, his work flirts with the relationship between light and time, texture, weight and form. The resulting story often reveals a transformation of a common object into abstraction, undeniably familiar, simultaneously foreign. In addition to Spencer Hansen’s Art, which includes painting, sculpture, masks and photography, he is also the co-founder and creative director of BLAMO toys and BLAMO clothing, both conceived in rural Idaho and developed into established independent companies. When he is not experimenting in his Bali workshop, (designed from recycled Javanese boat wood and home for himself and co-workers), he travels between his home state of Idaho, Orcas Island, Japan, California and Europe.

“Lela”: is a Bat Spirit created and photographed by Spencer. Encountering LELA is like discovering a new species with an heir of familiarity, with the power to elicit nostalgia and a sense of belonging, yet an undeniable essence of something unknown. Lela was created for Strangers; a show inviting viewers to contemplate the perception of foreign encounters and wonder at their significance in this world.

19-Ornélie

2nd Prize Winner

Ornélie

Currently resides: France

“Royal Widow”, Polymer clay, acrylic paint, 27 x 20 x 20 cm.

Since graduating from the GOBELINS school of animation in Paris, Ornélie worked as an animation artist on numerous European feature films. Drawing characters in volume led her quite naturally towards figurative sculpture, which she started to practice as a self-taught artist. At a crossroads between volume and illustration, through portraits of female characters Ornélie develops an atmosphere often surreal and romantic, sometimes dark and strange. She is influenced as much by classical painting, as from comics and illustration, cinema, animation, and literature. By playing on the codes of the cabinet of curiosity, her sculptures reflect her dreams of fantasized eras, as Gothic and Victorian visions. All her artworks are strictly one-of-a-kind, handmade in full polymer clay. Flowers, eyes, fabric, lace and embroideries are modeled with polymer clay, then hand-painted. Ornélie is happy to be at the start of her journey as an explorer of this modern material, which she hopes, combined with her ideas and technical skill, will allow her to explore her creative potential. She will continue to develop her work, playing with containers and floating effects, along with the modeling of fabrics and the render of materials, textures and patterns. She plans to make more ambitious pieces, while keeping the pop and surrealist spirit that she loves : challenging herself is largely the driving force behind her art.

“Royal Widow”: The king is dead. With her mourning dress, the queen wears the appropriate outfit, which contrasts with the color of her thoughts. With the glass dome (and the face) which can be rotated and thus allow the sculpture to be opened, I wanted the effect of surprise more striking and the idea more impactful. The creation of this piece was really the pretext to deepen my work on the modeling and painting of fabric, lace and embroidery, with this unique color for the black dress with a whole range of shades of matte and glossy effects.

César-Orrico

1st Prize Winner

César Orrico

Currently resides: Spain

“Bosque”, Bronze, 67 x 40 x 35 cm.

Born in Spain in 1984, César Orrico is a contemporary figurative sculptor. His work proposes a reflection on the syncretic character of contemporary society through the representation of the human form. The reference to different periods and contexts becomes visible in his sculptures, which metaphorically connect time and concepts. César obtained his licentiate degree in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid in 2007 and supplemented his specialization with postgraduate studies in Art Creation and Research. Over the last few years, his work has been singled out for recognition in world-class competitions. In 2019, he received the Jean Asselbergs Prize from the Taylor Foundation in Paris and won First Prize in Sculpture two years in a row, 2021 and 2022, in the 15th and 16th International ARC Salon, United States. Also in 2022, his work was awarded the Mariano Benlliure Sculpture Medal. In 2023, he received the Reina Sofía Prize for Painting and Sculpture in Madrid. César has participated in outstanding individual and collective exhibitions in cities of America, Europe and Asia, with a particular presence in the United States, France and England. His work has also been shown in contemporary art fairs and salons of recognised standing such as Context Art Miami, Art Wynwood, LA Art Show, Hamptons Fine Art Fair New York, London Art Fair or ST-ART Strasbourg, and his works have been included in public and private collections around the world.

Bosque“: Reflects on the importance of connecting with the inner essence, a concept that is represented through the meditative attitude of the figure and the introspection reflected in her face. The yearning for spiritual transcendence is perceptible in the weightless nakedness of her body, which appears metaphorically suspended in a world where nature and human being come together to form a perfect symbiosis.

Congratulations to the 2024 Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize 33PA Emerging Artist Award Winners: Senescence, Ross Takahashi & Nadine Tralala!

Theseus

3rd Prize Winner

Senescence

Currently resides: Australia

“Theseus”, Marker (Copic and Generic), Colored Pencil, Ballpoint, gel and felt tip on rag stock paper, 81.4 x 118.9 cm

Born in Adelaide Australia Senescence began informally illustrating in black and white pencil at an early age, before entering the visual arts industry at eighteen. Following my various roles in the commercial graphic arts sector he completed a psychology and then medical degree, ultimately specialising in the teaching of surgical and medical anatomy at the University of Adelaide. After over fifteen years in Senescence academic role, and just before the birth of his daughter, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor as well as several other health concerns. Unable to return to work Senescence have come full circle to his art origins. He has never created art for himself nor outside of the commercial space, and so he begins this part of his life a new, merging several decades of experience into one.

“Theseus”: Stemming from Greek mythology, the Ship of Theseus grew to be a thought experiment as to whether an object is the same after having had all its original components replaced. The idea has been and continues to be explored in the context of human identity, as well as individual anatomy and physiology. From a cellular level and possibly more we are all something new today, with most of the body being replaced with analogous parts at varying speeds. The same question has and will likely be asked when medical technology enables a lot more of our bodies to be augmented. Arguably you of now will never be again, so what features most make you – you.

Birds of a Feather Nesting Together

2nd Prize Winner

Ross Takahashi

Currently reside: United States

“Birds of a Feather Nesting Together”, Cast Bronze, patina, 26 x 16 x 14 in

Ross Takahashi is a Japanese-American sculptor and art educator. His work focuses on human cognition, ecological impacts, and our current climate crisis. Ross holds a B.A. in Psychology from Nevada State University. His work takes from research in ecology and psycho-social systems of transgenerational threads of permanence, and evanescence. Each piece is derived from a basis of conceptual, and empirical research, and explores these topics through a magical realistic lens. Hyper realistic details help bridge the gap of our relationship with nature, and human-related forms. Metals are an important medium in his practice, as they represent immortality, and a means for lasting preservation of temporary elements.

“Birds of a Feather Nesting Together”: A flock of birds building a children’s chair as a nest for their and our young. Created as a magical realistic take on ecological memory interwoven with post generational trauma impacted by humanity on the world surrounding us. This delicate piece is made purely out of bronze, with patina and polish.

Nadine-Tralala

1st Prize Winner

Nadine Tralala

Currently resides: Germany

“I Was Stone”, Oil on panel, 50 x 60 cm

Nadine Tralala is a figurative oil painter based in Germany. Her work blends classical techniques with modern surrealism and creates a dreamlike atmosphere, offering the viewer a moment of calm in a chaotic world. She is known for her bold and vivid color palette, which makes her otherworldly figures seem to radiate with an ethereal glow. Nadine aims to make people feel comfort and peace through her art, like the warm embrace of a long-lost friend. “I inhale the world and paint a healed version of it.”

“I Was Stone”: Pays tribute to a resilience that is as unyielding as stone. Even in our darkest moments, in the deepest of nights, an inner light shines within each of us. The woman in my painting glows from within, she herself lightens up the darkness surrounding her. With two lambs by her side, symbolizing rebirth and new beginnings, she awaits the dawn to break.

Andrew Hosner discusses the history and ethos behind the collection and Thinkspace LA

True Trailblazers within the art community

From press release: The Hosners simultaneously rallied a heartful community of like minds while building a remarkable collection that represents a wide swath of bold contemporary artists – many of whom have since become internationally recognized.

Beginning with a small work by Jeff Soto that they purchased in the 2000s for around $300, the Hosners together evolved into inveterate collectors who championed emerging artists in what they call the New Contemporary Art movement, including Neo-Pop, street art and graffiti, art collectibles, and contemporary ceramics.

They co-founded Thinkspace in 2005, operating from a space in the Silver Lake neighbourhood’s bustling Sunset Junction and eventually relocating to Culver City in 2021. As both collectors and gallerists, the Hosners have been more likely to set market trends than follow them: “The first rule of buying for us, and myself moving forward, will always be you have to like it,” says Andrew Hosner. “We’ve never really tried to buy simply because of a name.”

Banksy: Parachuting Rat

The Banksy: Parachuting Rat

A couple of the marquee works in the auction are works from the UK artist Banksy. The first is a really special piece, since there’s really not been many to come to market over the years: his iconic Parachuting Rat image. Which, by and large, he really only did on the streets. When Shawn and I got married in 2005, we did a really simple ceremony because that was Shawn in a nutshell. The following week we decided to have a little soiree at the house to celebrate […] and everyone had brought very nice little knickknacks and gifts, even though we told them not to.

Definitely the coolest thing that we had gotten was gifted to us by our close friends, who at the time owned and operated the Lab 101 Gallery. Evan and Freddie brought us over a work on cardboard of the parachuting rat from Banksy, who at the time was super cool and underground. They brought it over and they were like, ‘Hey, this is from not too long ago when Banksy was in town and he did that little pop up show here in LA […] he stayed with us and bombed on some pieces, and this is actually on a piece of cardboard from where Evan used to work.’”

Other Collection highlights

Undoubtedly, many of the artists whose works the Hosners showed and collected have become important. Highlights include Banksy’s 2002 Parachuting Rat (est. $40,000–60,000], Jen Stark’s 2011 sculpture Beyond Finite (est. $20,000–30,000), the figurative drawings Words of Wisdom from Javier Calleja (est. $20,000–40,000) and The Street (Sketch) from Mark Ryden. A group of works from Roby Dwi Antono include the 2022 Love Me Do (Study) (est. $20,000–30,000) and the 2021 sculpture Asteria (est. $10,000–15,000), which was exhibited at the Thinkspace exhibition Epos.

Though hesitant to apply any one label to their collection, Hosner does note that it skews toward the figurative. This propensity shows up everywhere across the collection, from Audrey Kawasaki’s 2008 panel As I Fall (est. $15,000–25,000) to Betye Saar’s Floating Doll with Ball in the Galaxy (est. $10,000–15,000), as well as works from KAWS, Hebru Brantley, Swoon, Edgar Plans and others. The collection also shows an affinity for the “Beautiful Losers” group, with works from Shepard Fairey, Margaret Kilgallen, Barry McGee, and Ed Templeton. Leading lots of the sale include Kilgallen’s mixed-media Untitled (Fawk-Fate) (est. $20,000–$40,000) and Shephard Fairey’s 2017 Damaged Pig Painted (est. $15,000–20,000).

The Hosners have also been avid fans of ceramic sculpture, by both canonized makers and emerging ones alike. Richard Pettibone’s 1962 Untitled (est. $4,000–6,000) and Peter Shire’s Untitled (Cup) ($800–1,000) accompany ceramic works from new generations, with examples from Josh Cloud, Sharif Farrag, Raven Halfmoon, En Iwamura, Kazuhito Kawai, Grant Levy-Lucero, Narumi Nekpenekpen, Brian Rochefort, Maryam Yousif, and others.

Alongside ceramics are a range of works from emerging LA artists working in paint and mixed media, including Shizu Saldamando, Jeremy Shockley, and others.

A significant chapter for both LA culture and contemporary art

Talking about his decision to bring this collection to auction, Andrew Hosner shares: “I felt that it was more important to keep the gallery going and all that comes with it: the community, our extended gallery family, and all of our ‘children’ that are the artists that we’ve supported over the years, that they continue to have a place to exist and nurture and grow and support each other… that ultimately is the best legacy that I could ask for, for Shawn.”

Works featured in The Collection of Shawn & Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace LA and The Collection of Shawn & Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace LA: Online Only will be on view September 9th – 12th at LAMA’s new location at 6666 Lexington Ave, Los Angeles.

Issue 46 of Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, with artist Jennybird Alcantara’s fantastical painting, “The Seduction”, on the cover is on sale now! Contact one of our Stockists or Shop Online, but don’t miss this special Issue. Take a peek at what’s inside below.

Beautiful Bizarre Magazine Issue 46

Inside this Issue, we delve into the painterly works of Aaron Westerberg. With a notable edge of old-world elegance, his style is heavily influenced by his artistic hero, John Singer Sargent, who, among other painters, collectively defined much of our 21st century schemas of 19th century art. Aaron is not a painter of portraits, but rather, a portrayer of emotion. In letting his sentiments flow through his brushstrokes onto the canvas, he releases the emotion from his body, processing the feeling and letting it go.

We also discover the inspiring work of American sculptor, and 1st Prize Winner of the 2023 Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize, Yasha Young Projects Sculpture Award Forest Rogers, who will take you to an enchanted place, full of mystery and ethereal beauty, a place where you see wondrous transformations happening before your very eyes and yearn to believe that they were real.

There is something about the tension between one quality and another, the in-between points, the contrast of grace and fear or strength and delicacy, or avian and human: these combinations engage me.

Forest Rogers

There is a bittersweet charm to Issue 46 cover artist Jennybird Alcantara’s paintings. On the surface lies a sentimental sweetness. Her work feels reminiscent of antique chocolate box cottages furnished with kitschy wallpaper, floral China tea sets and cherished knick-knack ceramic figurines. Woodland creatures with their big doe eyes, untouched by the horrors of the world, beckon viewers forward. Take a closer look and one might realise that hidden behind these charming pastels lie gloomy shadows and blackened corners, as a looming sadness approaches only to be gently washed away by a sense of hope.

There’s a sliver of time before you actually fall fully asleep where the mind is in between the conscious and unconscious state, and the subconscious can come into view. If you can let your mind linger in that place for as long as possible, vivid pictures can appear, showing you possibilities of where the artwork can go. I’m assuming that this isn’t special to me and can work for anyone who gives it a go, but it’s something that I’ve done as a means of accessing ideas just out of reach of the conscious mind for as long as I can remember.

Pol Kuruzc

Next we take a look at the fantastic visions of Pol Kurucz, a self-taught artist that has been making vibrant strides within both the art and drag communities with his hyper pop photography style all while making cultural critiques on social, gender and aesthetic norms that feel both humorous and palpable in style and tone.

I hope my work will help the audience challenge their perception of normality and transport them into a world that is remote enough that one can be freed from toxic triggers and reimagine themselves.

Victoria Olt, owner of Victoria Olt Gallery

Time to get inspired as we learn what Victoria Olt, owner of Victoria Olt Gallery in Estonia would like to add to her personal collection in this Issue’s Curator’s Wishlist.

We also take a deep dive into the work of 32-year-old UK photographer Claire Luxton whose oeuvre has mostly centred around photographing herself. We uncover fascinating contradictions and paradoxes within Claire – the person and the artist – and her work. The introvert behind the camera who thrives in front of it. Open and honest stories hidden in symbolism and double entendre.

My use of textiles is not only a conceptual way to make a statement about craft and its feminine associations, but I also want to reveal their artistic possibilities and qualities: that all materials are equally important and permissible to make art with.

Anne von Freyburg

If a Rococo masterpiece could speak, what would it say? Anne von Freyburg, a modern woman and contemporary artist who is consistently questioning the social and aesthetic constructs of femininity and western beauty, was willing to dive in with works pairing the fine art of painting with that quintessential “female” pastime, embroidery – letting ideas, hypotheses, and emotions burst into a beautiful chaos of acrylic and spray paint, sequins, polyester wadding, and hand-dyed fringes.

Matthias-Verginer-sculpture
Matthias Verginer

Thoughts get wings in the hands of Matthias Verginer. The soul rests. The world stops spinning. Nature is at arm’s length. It’s time to breathe again and let the mind fly. A quiet cartographer of the psyche, Matthias uses sparing, minimalist concepts, and carefully chosen materials that speak volumes through shared moments of truth.

What are in essence Matthias Verginer’s autobiographical self-portraits, sublimely and forever steeped in silence, are also a rallying cry for everyone to hit pause.

Excerpt by danai molocha

Bold colours cast upon darkened backgrounds make the flora and fauna of Fatima Ronquillo’s paintings come to life. Existing somewhere between Rococo and Baroque, these extraordinary pieces feel right at home alongside Vermeer and Boucher. The spellbound expressions show figures devoted to the stories so carefully crafted for them.

My instinct to hide away has been overtaken by the more crucial need to represent and be seen, to use the pictorial voice that I have been gifted with. Like a lot of artists I have always felt like an outsider, doubly so for being a minority. I think it is invaluable that all children (including those who would be future artists) should see themselves mirrored in the paintings that they see, to have a sense of belonging.”

Fatima Ronquillo

Noah Norrid, a resident of Copenhagen, Denmark does not consider himself uniquely preoccupied with themes of mortality and life’s fleeting nature, these concepts naturally surface in his work. His focus on the natural world allows him to explore universal themes and relationships, tapping into a long history of humans depicting nature as a reflection of their experiences.

Travel deeper into Issue 46 and see how Laine Bachman’s fascination with fables and fairytales from her childhood have deeply influenced her work. She delves into the history and beliefs behind these stories, drawing on a wealth archetypes and symbols that resonate across cultures and time. This allows her to create hybrid creatures and imagined flora and fauna, presenting them as if documenting undiscovered species and their habitats.

In the Quick Q & A editorial, we ask Alfred Liu, Hiro, Mao Hamaguchi, Abigail Goldman, Garis Edelweiss [1st Prize Winner of the 2023 Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize, Digital Art Award], and Andrea du Plessis to answer the same questions:

 • What are your goals as an artist?
 • What do you struggle most with as an artist?
 • What was the most helpful feedback you ever received?
 • How do you approach the challenge of staying relevant and current in the rapidly changing world of contemporary art?

In this issues’ Collector’s Profile, Yasha Young, juror and sponsor of the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize’s Yasha Young Projects Sculpture Award speaks to us about her life as an entrepreneur, curator, collector and mentor.

I believe that art should be inclusive and accessible to all cultures. Observing gaps in cultural representation and opportunities, I felt a strong need to build something that would include diverse voices in the discourse of art history. My mission has been to offer opportunities regardless of educational background, ensuring that everyone has a chance to contribute to and benefit from the art world.

Richard and I had a much smaller art collection prior to the launch of Beautiful Bizarre Magazine in 2013, and, more specifically, prior to the first of our curated exhibitions. Almost all of the works in our home, and in our exhibition at NERAM, have been acquired from our own shows. The artworks from these exhibitions are incredibly important to us, not only because we love the works themselves but also because we feel a deep need to support the emerging and mid-career representational artists within the Beautiful Bizarre aesthetic.

Danijela Krha Purssey

She also embraces the incredible legacy of this year’s Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize. When you are reading this in September you will have had your opportunity to vote for the Catherine K. Gyllerstrom People’s Choice Award from the 149 short-listed Finalists here. So make your voice heard – vote for your favourite works today! The Winners of the 2024 Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize will be announced via our usual channels during the week of the 13th of September.

We are huge fans of miniature artist Abigail Goldman’s complexly provoking 1:87 scale dioramas. Merging everyday situations with often-gory scenes, you’ll double take her instantly recognisable works, encouraging you to reflect on the deeper meaning behind the brutality and darker side of humanity on show. Seriously: there’s a lot to unpack in her tiny dramas. Aptly referred to as “die-o-ramas” by the artist herself, there’s something in the effortlessly cute miniature scale and at-first-glance everyday scenes which offers a blanket of additional charm through which to process her surreal narratives. Juxtaposition is a fine tool to encourage further reflection, and Abigail Goldman wields it beautifully.

As well as her Quick Q+A feature in the upcoming September issue #46 of Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, Abigail is currently enjoying her latest solo show at Hashimoto Contemporary in New York. Her solo State of Nature runs until 31st August, so there is still time to catch her works in person and enjoy her latest series of works.

State of Nature is “brutally honest about taboo violent fantasies buried under social contracts”, inviting us to explore what our own actions may be like without societies’ laws stabilising the world around us. How moral are we, really? How much may our behaviours change if laws collapsed, and our current reality fell to total chaos? Complete with interactive lights – even in a cooking fire slow roasting a body – Abigail’s die-o-ramas are a darkly entertaining treat.

State of Nature with Hashimoto Contemporary explores the brutal impulses typically suppressed in everyday life on a 1:87 scale. Goldman uses her bloody miniature die-o-ramas not to shock, but to present complex and seemingly absurd narratives of human compulsions that bubble below the surface.

From press release //

Arguments about true human nature are a cornerstone of the Western philosophical canon. Optimists like John Locke believed life before governmental rule was a magnanimous paradise, while pessimists like Thomas Hobbes believed life before a ruler was “nasty, brutish, and short.” Washington-based miniaturist Abigail Goldman leans begrudgingly towards the latter.

Beyond the usual empty fields or rocky cliff sides, Goldman’s newest narratives of humans in their brutish natural state occur inside picturesque homes, fine dining restaurants, and even Buckingham Palace. Figures no larger than a pinky-fingernail spill and ooze blood, consume human flesh, and execute their houseguests among pleasant interiors. Perhaps due to their size or the elements of surprise, the gory incidents are laced with dark humour. There’s always something funny about elderly women in their Sunday finest breaking from expected composure.

Goldman imagines these images of ordinary, respectable people lashing out or giving into their urges as cathartic – it’s something you didn’t know you needed until you had it.

While the exhibition’s title refers to a time before human governance, Goldman clarifies that there are governing forces similar to ours in these miniature worlds:

“We’re generally polite. We stand in line. We signal to turn,” she writes. “We mostly follow the rules. But we’re fraying at the edges and a certain kind of madness is setting in. If people find any truth in my work, perhaps it’s seeing subterranean feelings suddenly come to the surface.”

About the Gallery //

Hashimoto Contemporary is a contemporary art gallery originally founded in 2013 by Ken Harman Hashimoto. In 2023 the gallery announced two new partners, Dasha Matsuura and Jennifer Rizzo. Their roster consists of an eclectic blend of emerging and mid-career contemporary artists. Hashimoto Contemporary provides a platform for artists whose identities and subjects have been historically relegated to the margins, as well as artists whose practices fit neatly into the canon of art history. You can find their galleries at the Minnesota Street Project (San Francisco), the Lower East Side (New York City) and Culver City (Los Angeles) where their three spaces organize new exhibitions monthly.

About the artist Abigail Goldman //

Abigail Goldman’s artistic practice centers around miniature scenes of gruesome murders in plastic and acrylic. Dubbing her works “die-o-ramas,” Goldman’s miniature sculptures are rendered in 1:87 scale -each tiny figure is well under an inch tall, making them grotesque but familiar, grim but cute. The work’s diminutive size contrasts with the larger-than-life tableaus of gore and mayhem rendered within.

Though many of the narratives in Goldman’s scenes seem like something pulled from fiction, the artist draws almost exclusively from her professional life, where she witnesses and researches the “escalating feedback loop of rage and violence” present in American culture. At once adorable and offensive, Goldman’s “die-o-ramas” explore our relationship to violence – its omnipresence and resulting banality, as well as our innate attraction to the grisly and macabre.

Abigail Goldman’s miniatures have been exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work has been featured by numerous media outlets, including the LA Times, New York Times, NPR, Atlas Obscura, Juxtapoz, and Huffington Post, and the September 2024 issue #46 of Beautiful Bizarre Magazine. In March 2019, Goldman and her work were the subject of a documentary produced for Topic Magazine.

Quarantine Events Brutally Honest Oracle: your art questions answered, no holds barred https://beautifulbizarre.net/2024/08/12/quarantine-events-brutally-honest/ Mon, 12 Aug 2024 12:33:11 +0000 https://beautifulbizarre.net/?p=172874 “Social media is broken” declares Quarantine Events. Looking for a better way to build an art community, they've built The Brutally Honest Oracle.

The post Quarantine Events Brutally Honest Oracle: your art questions answered, no holds barred appeared first on Beautiful Bizarre Magazine.

]]>
“Social media is broken.” declares Darren Green, co-founder of Quarantine Events. This single – but significant – idea has been the driving force for Quarantine Events to review everything. How can they best connect with like-minded artists and help creatives who need it? How can they continue to build an international community, a place where artists seeking answers can access honest advice far away from judgement, and AI bots policing their every post? The answer unveiled itself – and the Brutally Honest Oracle was born.

The concept is simple: to get back to the roots of direct communication. You ask a (preferably genuine, from the soul) question, you get a (no holds barred, brutally honest) answer from their oracles, made up of their highly experienced coaches and mentors.

For this to work, Quarantine Events has thrown social media far out of the picture. They have returned to a delectable source of communication void of third-party control and data scraping. They have returned to the ever-surviving form of the bespoke newsletter. And that’s right – it’s free! Get ready for the Brutally Honest Oracle answering your artistic questions every fortnight.

The twist

Of course, this wouldn’t be Quarantine Events without a twist. At the heart of their incentive to provide a safe space where questions can be answered with truth, there lies an “indispensable quality for this oracle to work”: the answers must all be anonymous.

Each question chosen promises to be answered by one or more oracles, allowing artists to receive multiple points of view. Sometimes contradictory, always opening the mind, the anonymous oracles promise to give you their informed advice based on years of expertise.

The-brutally-honest-oracle

You will never know who’s on the other side of the crystal ball. If you knew which mentor was responding, the oracle would be corrupted, just like social media.

Why the anonymity?

If you have managed to go through life using the internet and never once been on the receiving end of some unwarranted offence, you are one of the rare few. From people being ridiculed for asking genuine questions to response videos based on someone else’s response video, the internet – and especially social media – is often a knotted loop of knee-jerk opinions and ego topped with a sprinkling of finely distributed unnecessary criticism.

There are, of course, well maintained “safe spaces”; closely monitored online communities with rules and regulations to instil order and security. These can be shining beacons for like-minded individuals and provide positive experiences. But there will always be capacity for uninvited voices to ruin the vibe within any public platform where genuine conversations may be trying to take place. In the world of social media, every piece of ourselves that we put out there is laid bare for others to do with as they wish. It can be vulnerable and draining. But there is another way. As the Quarantine Events team put it: “email lets us keep our dignity”.

This anonymity also works both ways; those asking the questions can also stay anonymous when submitting. The beauty is that this concept focuses on what matters most: the exchange of knowledge.

There’ll be delightful chaos, contradiction, and paradox. It’s an Oracle! But answers will always be informed and from the experienced.

What kind of questions can be asked?

While artists are encouraged to use their common sense when drafting questions, there is no limit to what – or how many questions – can be asked. “An honest answer requires an honest question. So, be brutally sincere.” Suggests Carles Gomila, Artist & Quarantine Events Director.

“Ask anything about using fear and vulnerability to make art. Anything about the creative process. Anything about how to be an artist. Anything about art education… Just don’t be annoying, and use common sense.” Says their handy FAQ.

The team will be grouping answers for the Brutally Honest Oracle by theme, so with Oracles giving their answers every fortnight, you may have to be patient. Rest assured, however, that each newsletter will have plenty to inspire you.

You don’t need to ask a question to be a part of the Quarantine Events Community

If you’re feeling apprehensive about getting involved, it’s important to remember that the Quarantine team welcome all curious creatives. You don’t even need to input a question to enjoy the Oracle newsletter; just sign up via their website and wait for the fun to glide into your inbox! From exploring self-identity neurosis to career advice and everything in between, the Brutally Honest Oracles are here to guide you, free of judgement.

As someone who receives hundreds of emails a day, sometimes it is hard not to feel overwhelmed when I open my inbox. Believe me when I say that the Brutally Honest Oracle is a breath of fresh air. These oracles’ answers will make your brain tick and fizz. Maybe you’ll be inspired to overcome an internal block or two.

We can all do with a little nudge to bring more art into our lives.

What could be better than expressing so many things through art, symbolizing the echo of human nature, distortion and motivation through time.

Darwin Leon

The origin story of Musonium Gallery – established in 2024 – begins with the ambition of its owner and her son to provide today’s inspiring contemporary talents with a catered platform to shine without being lost in the crowd. Being seasoned collectors with an impressive portfolio of original contemporary works contained in a private collection, Tracey and Keeley used their love of art and unique perspective of the world to mould the framework of Musonium Gallery with an emphasis on their European heritage. Focusing on polarizing art influenced by captivating topics such as philosophy, science, history, culture, and conceptual notions of prominent individuality, Tracey and Keeley seek to spark vast conversations that speak to all depths of society. Musonium Gallery’s inherent mission is to challenge perceptions of contemporary art and then take it that extra bit further by adding an inexplicable flair that just makes it the Musonium experience.

A culturally rich community

Visitors are certainly in for a treat. Situated in the Uptown Arts and Design District, Musonium Gallery’s new space in Palm Springs is in the heart of tourist paradise for those seeking some of the best art and culture experiences the Coachella Valley has to offer.

Located only a few blocks down the road from Musonium Gallery, the Palm Springs Art Museum is a cultural hub in the city, offering a diverse collection of modern and contemporary art, photography, and Native American art. Musonium Gallery is the perfect addition to this iconic, eclectic and vibrant area; the gallery’s presence further contributes to the region’s reputation as a must-visit destination studded with myriad compelling cultural gems, making it a fascinating place for art enthusiasts to explore. Palm Springs has also long been a getaway destination for Hollywood stars. During the 1930s to 1960s, many celebrities built homes in the area, enhancing its glamorous reputation. This connection continues to influence the local arts and culture scene to this day.

From Press Release //

It is with great pleasure to introduce Musonium Gallery and our inaugural group exhibition INITIATION: EXODUS, a triumphant introduction of the gallery’s program and much anticipated grand opening. Created and initially intended to open in late 2022 situated inside a former The Bank of Tampa branch building in Tampa, FL, Musonium Gallery has enthusiastically relocated to Palm Springs, CA for an inspiring new exhibition space in the Uptown Arts and Design District. This dramatic and distant departure from our initially intended Tampa flagship marks a pivotal shift in renewed energy and courage as Musonium embarks on this new journey. Quite literally, our own exodus. As the title suggests, INITIATION: EXODUS celebrates the inception of Musonium, the gallery’s ambitious endeavours ahead, the departure from one location to another, and the global induction of world-class talented contemporary artists who embody Musonium Gallery’s vision and mission.

Kevin-Kuenster-Seduction
Kevin Kuenster
Seduction, 24″ x 24″, Cold Wax on Wood Panel

The elegant, yet mysterious sculpture Cleo by Tim Roosen, features copper eyes with elaborate forged metal hair as well as welded elements creating an alluring metal maiden, where “a Gothic dream meets a Dieselpunk nightmare.” Darwin Leon’s The Rubenesque Paradox (inspired by Peter Paul Rubens’ The Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus) channels the old masters whilst bringing a unique contemporary flair to the forefront. Lorella Ragnatelli’s sultry figurative painting, titled Torment and Ecstasy, demonstrates academic precision observed through the treatment of the human body in an in-between state of tension and relaxation, whilst echoing the dynamic of two lovers who grow together but who can also grow apart if their passion is neglected. In Kevin Kuenster’s provocative piece titled, Seduction, two love interests are depicted sharing cherries on tranquil waters as the swaying of the wooden boat brings them closer together, whilst the clouds behind them manifest into pictorial representations of their lust. Ginger’s Don’t Grow Up, It’s A Trap explore the surreal, where feline and feminine energies align to create metaphorical depictions of women’s empowerment.

With an easy submission process you can guarantee that your work will be seen by our Editor-in-Chief Danijela Krha Purssey. Why is this important? Because it isn’t just about winning (although that would be amazing) – the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize is also our fountain of inspiration. Every year we discover many new artists through our Art Prize, who then go on to be published on our website, our print magazine, and are also invited to our curated exhibitions. It is the best way to get on our radar!

Giving the practices of representational artists validation and visibility, particularly in the commercial gallery and museum sector where it is still hard to get representation, is what the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize aims to achieve.

Delving into the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize after 6 years of competitions (2018-2023).

Written by Mauricio Gonzalez, Founder & CEO ARTDATAintel

Darwin said: “Every species has to fight harder and more often to retain its leadership position than it originally did to acquire it.” Animals must keep fighting harder to stay king of the jungle. Fish must swim faster to cross the seas first and birds must fly higher to own the skies. In a similar fashion so must Painters, Photographers, Sculptors, and Digital Artists.

Most Art Competitions accept only individual ‘species’ making it easier to select those with “the sharper beaks, the longer horns or the brightest feathers.” What makes the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize so special is that it strategically mixes all the ‘species’ into one to compete for leadership in a single arena to be the champion of the Beautiful Bizarre art world.

During its 6-year history, the competition has received thousands of submissions but only 725 awards have been given (counting Winners, Honourable Mentions and Finalists) to 515 artists. Here we celebrate the Top 16 most awarded artists. These are the ones who have demonstrated their sheer talent and will to retain their leadership positions by winning the most awards from 2018 to 2023.

Using the power of ARTDATAintel’s multi-year statistics, we will now recount the 4 leaders and 12 challengers at the top of the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize.

Join the Grand Opening of Nanny Goat Gallery for a new style of art in the North Bay Area https://beautifulbizarre.net/2024/07/11/nanny-goat-gallery-ephemeral/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 13:55:36 +0000 https://beautifulbizarre.net/?p=171399 Nanny Goat Gallery celebrates its Grand Opening in Petaluma this Friday, July 12 with 70+ artists in their maiden exhibition, Ephemeral.

There are plenty of galleries around us in Petaluma, it’s quite an artist hub, but not one is doing what we are. In bringing these artists to a new area, they’ll hopefully be seen and appreciated by a whole new audience.

Nanny Goat Gallery

If you’re reading this, chances are that you appreciate art that exists outside of mainstream circles. If chances are serendipitous enough for you to be around the North Bay Area of California this Friday, you can also be a part of something special, as Nanny Goat Gallery prepares for its Grand Opening!

Taking roots in the Petaluma arts scene, Nanny Goat Gallery celebrates new and contemporary representational art, predominantly in the pop surreal, narrative, and fantasy genres. Their Grand Opening kicks off with over 70 artists from around the world bringing heart-lurchingly good artworks together under their maiden exhibition, Ephemeral. From original paintings to intricate sculptures, these enchanting artworks accrue to the perfect collection to be enjoyed within the gallery’s riverfront mid-19th century brick building – an original from Petaluma’s Gold Rush era.

Its founders Emily and Paul Eccles have come a long way since starting Nanny Goat Gallery online in 2022. Having overcome multiple challenges including personal health issues, securing their dream building and then dealing with renovation delays, the couple are more than ready to celebrate their big opening. “While running the online gallery I had completely fallen in love with the community and the artists I was working with.” Shares Emily. “I wanted to do something to make them proud, as well as make us proud.”

Their hard work has not gone to waste. Far from the minimalist white walls experience, Nanny Goat Gallery happily leans into its historical foundations. The gallery boasts a two-room space with rustic brick walls, across the street from the river in downtown Petaluma. “It’s a beautiful space!” Emily smiles. “I plan on us being a little non-traditional. Our space will be cozy and inviting. We’ve brought in some antique furniture and traditional pedestals to complement the antiquity of the space. I want people to feel really welcome and I want us to fit the old Victorian style of the neighborhood we’re in. Stark white rooms just wouldn’t do. I’m a maximalist and that will show in the gallery as well.”

Natasha-Zraikat-Tempest
Natasha Zraikat: “Tempest”

We have put all of our heart into this passion project and are humbled by all of the hard work put in by the artists. If it weren’t for their enthusiasm and dedication to the gallery, none of this would be possible, of course.

Supporting the bond between artists and collectors

The opening of Nanny Goat Gallery is a celebration of Emily and Paul Eccles’ love for the arts, allowing them to further their support of local and international creatives within the fantasy, surrealist and other less mainstream genres. Paul, a Shakespearean actor for over 15 years, loves collecting art as much as Emily, whose studies in literature and art history make it no surprise that they ended up in the beautiful cultural arts hub of Petaluma.

Both collectors themselves, the founders understand the positive power that art can have. For Emily, however, this connection runs even deeper: “I had always wanted to collect art. Over a five-year period, I had five invasive surgeries due to stage 4 endometriosis and really struggled. Walking through the hospitals, I remember how happy the art made by local artists would make me. I was grateful they had donated their work to the hospitals and realized it was a way to bring joy into my life when not much did. I started looking into collecting art at home soon after. Paul had a Jeremy Miranda commissioned for my 40th birthday and it continued from there.

“I started following more artists and galleries on social media platforms and have enjoyed getting to know both gallerists and artists alike. Honestly, I had always been intimidated by the idea of collecting but found the art world quite void of pretense. I found out that collecting art was fun and brought me so much joy!”

An accessible gallery

At the heart of it all, Nanny Goat Gallery exists to bring underrepresented styles of art into the limelight of the North Bay Area. To ensure accessibility, Paul and Emily aim to introduce collectors to beautiful works at a range of prices. “Having something for everyone is important to me. I want to show art that people can really connect with.” explains Emily. “I love a good landscape or still life, but Paul and I connect more with the art that tells a story and is open to interpretation.”

It’s also important to me to show emerging artists, something collectors haven’t seen before. All of the solos we have lined up through next June feature artists newer to galleries. In some cases, we’re the first time an artist has worked with a gallery. I love that!

The Grand Opening

For those expecting a fun party – you won’t be disappointed! Situated in the heart of wine country, there will be wine and beer, complimented by the beer garden next door with live music to get you in the groove. Get there early to enjoy Nanny Goat Gallery’s small ribbon cutting before being welcomed inside at 5pm to look at over 70 beautiful works of art.

“Downtown Petaluma really comes to life on Friday nights.” Emily exclaims, excitedly. “A warm night by the river in wine country. What else is there?”

“This collaboration was born from the desire to tell the heterogeneous cultural heritage that we have been safeguarding for generations with a language that is complementary to that traditionally used by our sector. Art, like Wine, is a bridge capable of starting infinite dialogues, exchanges and stories. Art and Wine both express openness, sharing and otherness: they generate unique, personal and unrepeatable emotions in their users. In this sense, wine is art, passion and culture”, said Michele Zonin, vice president of the Group.

Giulio-Cinti-sculptor-artist

Creative Process From the Artist

My artistic journey has always been fueled by themes of ecstasy, the liberation of instincts, and the celebration of the divine through the Dionysian. Collaborating with Zonin has allowed me to explore these themes with renewed fervor and depth, connecting my art to the world of wine, a symbol of conviviality and ancient social rituals. Wine, in its essence, embodies the power to unite people, free speech and spirits, and transform a simple meeting into a sacred, almost ritualistic moment. Through my six works, inspired by Bacchanalia and Dionysian rites, I have tried to capture this metamorphosis, representing figures such as Dionysus, the Bacchae, and other key characters from the god of wine’s retinue.

With my works, I aim to express the profound connection between wine and the human need to consecrate moments of conviviality, elevating them to a level of sacredness. Wine has the power to dissolve, spread, and evoke an uncontrollable spirit of elevation and transformation, thus enhancing its ability to unite and liberate people in a collective experience of celebration.

Zonin1821 Celebrates 200 Years of Italian Wine Culture with Art Collaboration at London Wine Tasting

Press // Blending Wine and Sculpture

Wine, an intergenerational bridge, inspires new artistic creations.

“With my work, I capture wine’s deep connection and its ability to elevate gatherings into sacred celebrations of life,” says Giulio Cinti, Architect and Sculptor. Cinti’s art explores ecstasy, instinct, and the divine through the Dionysian. His collaboration with ZONIN1821 links these themes to the social rituals of wine, making simple meetings profoundly authentic and ritualistic.

Cinti’s six sculptures depict figures like Dionysus and the Bacchae, each linked to a unique Cru. From Aquilis of Ca’ Bolani to Il Solatio of Castello di Albola, including Oltrenero Brut Nature, Altemura of Masseria Altemura, Deliella of Principi di Butera, and Octagon of Barboursville, wine becomes both inspiration and material. The sculptures invite viewers to engage, just as a toast reveals deeper meanings.

“This project showcases our cultural heritage through a new lens. Art, like Wine, sparks endless dialogues and stories. Both create unique, personal emotions. Wine is Art, Passion, and Culture!” says Michele Zonin, Vice President of ZONIN1821 Group.

For more information, contact Monica Colussi, curator of Giulio Cinti. Based in London, Monica has extensive experience in contemporary art, collaborating with renowned artists and curating major exhibitions. Her expertise bridges the gap between artist and audience, offering new perspectives.

This initiative is part of ZONIN1821’s engagement with Art and Culture. Last year, Castello di Albola featured “Parallel Dialogues,” blending art and wine through works by Fabio Calvetti and Armando Xhomo.

Technical Details

“The creation starts with clay modeling, defining the final form. The clay sculpture forms a detailed mold. Next, liquid resin is layered inside the mold, faithfully replicating every detail. Mineral aggregates and pigments are added for texture and color.

I integrate wine into the work using a mixture of micronized silica and wine, dried to form a pigmented powder. This pigment makes wine an essential part of the sculpture. Once the resin hardens, the sculpture is removed from the mold, refined, and polished,” explains Giulio Cinti, Architect and Sculptor.

Artist Bio

Giulio Cinti, born in Rome in 1990, has a distinguished academic and professional background. He graduated in Architecture from La Sapienza University in 2018 and completed a Master’s in Jewellery Design at the Academy of Costume and Fashion in 2017/2018. He further honed his skills with courses in anatomical drawing and sculpture under masters Giorgio Dante and Paolo Brozzi.

In 2015, he debuted his solo exhibition ‘Mickey ist Tot’ in Sperlonga, blending jewelry and sculpture. In 2021/2022, he completed ‘La Scultura di Tutti’ on Kickstarter, creating the bronze sculpture ‘Maria che scioglie i Nodi’ for Santa Maria delle Grazie in Rome. He also created a bronze bust of San Filippo Neri for the Parish of the Holy Trinity of Pilgrims in Rome and sculptures of the Four Evangelists for the Parish of San Pio X.

About the Thinkspace Projects //

Thinkspace Projects was founded in 2005; now in LA’s burgeoning West Adams District, the gallery has garnered an international reputation as one of the most active and productive exponents of the New Contemporary Art Movement. Maintaining its founding commitment to the promotion and support of its artists, Thinkspace Projects has steadily expanded its roster and diversified its projects, creating collaborative and institutional opportunities all over the world. Founded in the spirit of forging recognition for young, emerging, and lesser-known talents, the gallery is now home to artists from all over the world, ranging from the emerging, mid-career, and established.

The New Contemporary Art Movement, not unlike its earlier 20th Century counterparts like Surrealism, Dada, or Fauvism, ultimately materialized in search of new forms, content, and expressions that cited rather than disavowed the individual and the social. The earliest incarnations of the Movement, refusing the paradigmatic disinterest of “Art” as an inaccessible garrison of ‘high culture’, championed figuration, surrealism, representation, pop culture, and the subcultural.

By incorporating the ‘lowbrow,’ accessible, and even profane, an exciting and irreverent art movement grew in defiance of the mandated renunciations of “high” art. Emerging on the West Coast in the 90’s partly as a response to the rabid ‘conceptual-turn’ then championed on the East Coasts, the Movement steadily created its own platforms, publications, and spaces for the dissemination of its imagery and ideas.

‘SMOL’, Small works group exhibition

‘SMOL’ is a very special show for us here at Thinkspace. Shawn had been wanting to get this show together for a while and we were just about to dive into putting it together when cancer took her from us. We had a rough list coming to life and I made it my mission to bring her vision to life and I am so excited with how many creatives from our family were able to take part with such short notice. We’ve always been a champion of starting your collection out with smaller works and I still actively collect smaller works to this day. I like to think Shawn is proud of this show and proud of me and our family as we work to bounce back after the greatest loss any of us could imagine. This was the last show she was actively involved in putting together with me, which definitely makes this all a bit too bittersweet.

’SMOL’ showcases works sized 16×20 inches and under. We want to give young collectors and those on a budget the chance to get something nice for themselves, as well as encouraging all of our patrons to collect smaller works, as they bring so much joy. The show title plays off the popular internet slang for saying someone or something is small in size and so cute that you just want to squeeze ‘em.

Visit the gallery website for a full list of participating artists!

LUCAS LOBO, ‘I Water Flowers In the Rain’

Lucas Lobo lives and works in Brazil… past that, he is an enigma, even to us. His hyper detailed, overly saturated works are a mind-bending menagerie of pop culture imagery funneled through Lobo’s unique lens.

It’s an honor to present a new collection of work on canvas and paper for ‘I Water Flowers In the Rain’ from this elusive creative genius out of South America.

HENDRA ‘HEHE’ HARSONO, ‘Once Upon A Blue Light’

Show Statement //

“Once Upon A Blue Light” focuses on the theme of human relations with social media: how new behaviours and habits are formed, and how to respond to them. Why am I interested in this issue? Well, besides being an active user of social media, it’s because social media has become an important part of everyday life with all its effects, positive or negative.

In my opinion, being immersed in social media for a long time inundates us with information and lack of imagination. Imagination is very important for me in creating work. Painting, for instance, is significant because through it, I can spark the imagination of those who see it.

The sentence “Once Upon a Blue Light” is a reference that I took from a fragment of the opening sentence common in fairy tales, “once upon a time…”. When I was little, I always read fairy tales before going to bed, but now, this ritual has been replaced by scrolling on my gadget. As we prepare our bodies to rest at night, the blue light emitted by our device screens signals the brain to remain active and awake.

Artist Bio //

Working and living as an artist in Jogjakarta. Studied at ISI Yogyakarta as a graphic arts major. Since the beginning he’s always been interested in working with painting, drawing, resin toys, with premises based on his experiences in everyday life and issues of contemporary culture.

ALVARO NADDEO, ‘Reaganomics Killed America’s Middle Class’

Show Statement //

“This body of work is a visual narrative of the economic policies that have eroded the stability and prosperity of America’s middle class. All that’s left are the debris and detritus of a once thriving segment of society, now navigating an increasingly precarious existence.

The structures I depict are unstable, built from discarded materials. These elements symbolize the resourcefulness and tenacity of those struggling to adapt and survive.

Despite the dystopian themes, there is a whimsical absurdity in the juxtaposition of luxury brands with scenes of poverty and decay. This contrast highlights the absurdity of wealth inequality and the false promises of consumer culture. Promises of success and happiness are juxtaposed against the stark reality of societal decline.

In “Reaganomics Killed America’s Middle Class,” I invite viewers to engage in a visual dialogue about the consequences of economic policies and the resilience of those left in their wake. This series continues my exploration of waste, overconsumption, and social inequality, and I hope it prompts a deeper reflection on the realities of our society. As always, my work is a game of clues and connections, challenging viewers to piece together the narrative and uncover the underlying messages within the chaos.”

Artist Bio //

I am originally from São Paulo, Brazil and have also lived in Lima, New York City and currently in Los Angeles. These urban environments have shaped my memory and permeate most of my work. I am partly self-taught and partly homeschooled. My father is an illustrator, and as a kid I spent many hours drawing and watching him work. He was a constant source of inspiration and encouragement, but having an artist father also proved frustrating at times. At 17, I remember comparing my work to his and thinking my drawings and paintings were not good enough. I quit. I pursued a career in advertising as an Art Director, something that still allowed me to exercise my interest in art but without requiring mastery with the pencil or brush. 20 years later, while living in New York City and being exposed to its many contrasts, my desire to pick up the brushes intensified. Now I am back to painting and this time I’m not quitting.

The subject matter of my work is waste, overconsumption and social inequality. Trash and objects found in the street are valuable, and not only for aesthetic reasons. The brands, logos and packaging depicted in my work are objects with an inherent duality, both desirable and despicable, a clear byproduct of having worked in advertising for more than 20 years.

Whether you hold an interest in comic books or not, I guarantee that you will recognise Jack Kirby’s artistic influence. Widely recognized as one of the most influential creators in comic book history, Jack’s prolific journey across the decades has heavily influenced how comics books have evolved. Some of the most well-known characters that he created, or co-created, include Captain America, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, the X-Men, the Hulk, Darkseid and the New Gods. Yet this is only the tip of his creative iceberg. The “scope of Kirby’s contributions to pop culture at large” is an incredible feat – one which Corey Helford Gallery, partnering with Jack Kirby Museum & Research Center, are celebrating on June 29th.

To celebrate, Corey Helford Gallery will be hosting a large group exhibition featuring over 70 artists alongside original works by Jack Kirby himself. Each artist has created a bespoke new work inspired by Jack Kirby, celebrating the worlds and characters he has created, and the influence this has had on them. The array of well-known visuals, reinterpreted in multiple styles, promises to be a fascinating journey as you walk around Corey Helford Gallery; this isn’t to be missed!

From press release:

Throughout his half-century career, Kirby stretched the boundaries of comic art and storytelling with his innovative style. His storytelling is characterized by wild physicality that draws the reader’s eye from panel to panel, breathing life into static images in a way that few comic artists ever have.

His use of multi-layered “deep space” was integral to this as well as extreme anatomical foreshortening. Stylistic hallmarks such as his trademark “Kirby Krackle” have become the industry shorthand for strange, indescribable cosmic energies. Kirby’s squiggles, whether indicating metallic shine, futuristic and alien machinery/circuitry, or dynamic musculature, are enshrined in the comic book visual storytelling vocabulary.

His later intricate costume designs also invoke a cosmic comic book quintessence: Kirby headgear is a genre unto itself. Kirby machines are unlike any others, whether weapons, portals, or vehicles, they all draw in the eye and electrocute the viewing mind with their sublime technology.

Kirby’s artworks are as powerful today as the day they were created, and his influence lives on, as seen in the remarkable new works created for this very special exhibition.

“While I was raised to appreciate Modern Art, it’s always been my dream, as a comic collector, to have a show with Jack Kirby. And now I have one and I hope it inspires everyone else the way it inspired me. His work is thrilling, dynamic, fun and if it doesn’t make you want to burst into flames, or stretch your arm around the block or surf the stars, then I don’t know what will.”

Bruce Helford, Co-founder of Corey Helford Gallery

About Jack Kirby:

Jack Kirby (1917-1994) was more than just a comic book artist: he was a storyteller, an innovator, and a visionary. His early work with Joe Simon on Captain America in the early 1940s saw characters breaking panel borders and narrative conventions as they fought across the pages. As superheroes fell out of favour for a period after World War II, he and Simon helped revitalize the industry with work on crime, war, sci-fi, and monster comics, while inventing the romance comic genre. By the time Kirby was doing what became his most famous and enduring work at Marvel in the 1960s, he was a seasoned veteran, yet only just coming into the full power of his creativity.

From the earliest Fantastic Four and Thor stories, Kirby crafted an entire industry that now fuels billion-dollar blockbuster movies and prestige TV shows. Kirby’s prolific but strained working relationship/partnership with Stan Lee couldn’t fully satisfy his overabundance of storytelling ideas, and he left Marvel in 1970 for chief competitor DC Comics, where he served as writer, artist, and editor on his own line of books, creating an entirely new cosmology that remains a cornerstone of that company’s storytelling, over 50 years after he left the very titles he founded.

Biblical in tone and mythical in scope, Kirby’s 1970s output remains some of the most startlingly ambitious work ever put on display in mainstream superhero comics. His ideas and storytelling techniques continue to inform virtually everyone who puts pencil to paper in the industry.

Kirby’s stories look for the best, most universal qualities of the human experience, even as the characters themselves reach beyond the cosmos. If there were a Mt. Rushmore of 20th century pop culture storytelling, Kirby should be etched alongside fellow visionaries like George Lucas, Gene Roddenberry, and Steven Spielberg.

Issue 45 of Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, with legendary fantasy artist Arantza Sestayo‘s mesmerizing painting, “Red”, on the cover is on sale now! Contact one of our Stockists or Shop Online, but don’t miss this special Issue. Take a peek at what’s inside below.

Beautiful Bizarre Magazine Issue 45

Inside this Issue, we delve into the work of Olga Esther, Born in Valencia, Spain on the very cusp of Francisco Franco’s dictatorship in 1975, Olga grew up surrounded with ideas of revolution and rebellion. Changing our perception of what it really means to be a princess, Olga shines a light on the harsh realities of gender, feminism, and womanhood.

We also discover the deeply inspiring work of Fabio Viale. Steeped in symbolism from the traditional tattoos used by Russian and Japanese criminals to tell their stories on their own bodies, Fabio connects past to present and high culture to the darkest corners of society’s underworlds.

I took a hammer and chisel and I suddenly saw a brilliant white shard inside the marble. Let’s say that at that moment, I decided to be a sculptor.

Fabio Viale

Issue 45 cover artist, Arantza Sestayo, has been endowed with the special gift of fleshing out these characters and tales in gorgeous, uncanny detail for the rest of us to reach, generously handing us the key to visions we don’t possess. Magical earthscapes dominated by exquisite creatures with flowers adorning their cascading locks, fair-skinned maidens and sensual mermaids born in another time and place.

I find so much inspiration in sadness. I was bewitched the first time I found out about Ophelia releasing her flowers in the water. Or women in Bécquer’s legends, who always have a melancholy or occult element. Even when I paint female warriors I think I unwittingly let a touch of melancholy show through.

Next we take a look at the work of American artist Kevin Sloan who meticulously and beautifully portrays wildlife as we would like to imagine it, in lovely arcadian settings, but always loaded with surrealistic symbolism depicting the ever-present threat posed by mankind.

Bernadette Bender Director of Bender Gallery
Bernadette Bender, Director of Bender Gallery

Time to get inspired as we learn what Bernadette Bender, Director of Bender Gallery would like to add to her personal collection, in this Issue’s Curator’s Wishlist.

We also take a deep dive into the work of British painter Alison Friend, the best “pawtraiture” artist of our times. She creates vivacious paintings of the furriest companions, often in comical and adorable poses: enjoying coffee, eating pizza, and playing cards.

What do the great Dutch masters, pop surrealism and Scrabble have in common? No, it’s not a trick question, although modern trompe l’œil virtuoso Natalie Featherston readily uses trickery to give her well-studied subjects a fresh dimension. What at first glance can seem like a quirky assemblage of lost-and-found paraphernalia, teasingly reveals its meaning – and startling mastery – upon closer inspection.

I slashed and burned my career as a cellist and never looked back – but that might not work for everyone. I knew if things didn’t pan out I had an orchestra job waiting for me. If you’re going to make a catastrophic change, I think it’s easier to just do it. No safety net. Sink or swim. Fully committing to a plan of action has a certain boldness and magic in it.

Natalie Featherson

This is the story of a teller of stories. They say that a picture tells a thousand words. When the pictures are of words – thousands of typed words on mysteriously scattering pages – the effect is exponential and there is much that is being told. And thus we immerse ourselves in creative captures of Damian Drewniak, the 47-year-old photographer and photographic painter from Poland.

Damian-Drewniak-photo
Damian Drewniak

Photography is a way to write about feelings. My work is a love story about loneliness. They are about melancholy and sadness, but they are optimistic in their finality.

Damian Drewniak

When an artist shares that they get bored easily, and that they are always ready to do the next thing, you can expect a life of rich and diverse creativity and projects. American artist Brian Haberlin is no exception. His works are known for their striking quality, celebrating the power of colour, lighting, and often experimenting with playful viewpoints.

As well, in this Issue of Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, Mark Jeffrey Santos whose dedication to mastering the chibi style shines through in his current body of work. His whimsical, pop surrealist paintings prominently feature a young boy characterised by large, curious eyes and rounded features typical of the chibi art style. He pairs this style with the core themes of travel and wandering as his work follows the many adventures of his young protagonist.

Mark Jeffrey Santos embodies the idea of the traveller. He’s the wandering artist who traverses our world and his own imagination.

Excerpt from Issue 45 by Samantha Dexter

Art is connected to emotion, imagination, and creativity. As such, the paintings of Megan Elizabeth Read, also known as Mae, are all these things. In the short time she has been a professional artist, she has crossed epic thresholds of both imagination and reality as she brings her oil paintings to life. With her seemingly impossible brushstrokes creating a dreamlike reality, Mae’s art borders on hyperrealism, but dances somewhere in the space between the corporeal and the ephemeral.

In the Quick Q & A editorial, we ask Fandi Angaa Saputra, Diego Fernandez, Grant Perry, Stephanie Inagaki, S.V. Williams, and Shinya Takanezawa answer the same questions:

 • What is the biggest change you’ve made to your art practice since you started, and why?
 • If you could only create one more work what would you like that work to say?
 • What impact has your upbringing and cultural background had on your work, and how it has influenced your approach and aesthetic?
 • What motivates you to keep going even when sales are slow or you hit a creative block?

In this issues’ Path to Creation, Brian Mashburn, takes us through the creation process of one of his incredible paintings.
